Hometown recruiting/What to do between primary and advanced...

I've heard some stuff going around about hometown recruiting between primary and advanced. Since the wait has been upwards of two months, do you have any other option besides a stash job at your primary or advanced location, or can you get out and do something else, i.e. hometown recruiting? Anyone doing this?

Yes you can OHARP. I've seen multiple people do it. Ask your command and then call an NRD and see if you can mesh the two together and get orders. Talk to wing stucon.

I just got back from doing OHARP while I wait for Helo Advanced. Easy to work it out as long as StuCon is cool w/ it. For TW5 the current policy is no more than 30 days. The instruction, BUPERSINST 1150.1B (encl 2), lays it all out for you. Contact the NRD's OPO (Officer Programs Officer) and see if they can use you (they probably can), and then take it to StuCon. Travel/lodging is all on your own dime.

OHARP was a great program even back when I went through. I opted for 30 days at Denver NRD. Went to a few high schools to speak and show off the uniform, stuffed some envelopes and attended a few meetings. The other 4 days of the week I was on the slopes skiing.

Enjoy the down time from studying etc. and have some fun.

Your mileage will vary in terms of OHARP quality of life. After commissioning I went home to do it as a stash job since I thought it was only going to be for a month because they told us we were going to report to Pcola pretty quickly. I got stuck at an assignment over an hour from my house and they had nothing for me to do, yet the OPO insisted I stay there all day. Needless to say I quit that and am doing the rest of my stash time at my ROTC unit. Moral of the story: don't assume you're going to get hooked up with free vacation time.

Because they thought I was going to Pcola quickly my TAD orders were only written for about 30 days and so my CO at my ROTC unit was going to have to extend them anyways. I just called him and asked him not to extend the orders and if it was cool if I came back. He had no problem with it so back I went.
