BTW, my post count/rep are horribly bugged. Admin to the rescue!

I actually just brought this up earlier today and was educated. Posts in Current News, Miscellaneous, or the War Zone do not count toward your post count.

Seems kind of ironic that a person with the screen name "blur" is telling about high resolution pictures.

Why are you worrying about that anyways? They really don't mean all that much.

Wasn't worried about it. Just figured if something was messed up I should get it fixed. Besides, I'm a developer and I can't stand bugs. :D

BTW, my name comes from the Transformers movie from the 80s; nothing to do with vision, haha.

I just do a google image search, and set it to return "Large" images. I've got a pretty nice DDG-51 image as my wallpaper now.

The Defense Visual Information Center (DVIC) is a really good site to download hi-res pictures which are in the public domain. DVIC's search feature allows you to search by platform, unit, subject matter, or photographer if you know who took the shot.

As a matter of fact, here's one of the photos on DVIC by our very own "Hey Joe".

Here's DVIC's address: http://www.dodmedia.osd.mil/

Blur: Your post count is correct, only 6 of your 13 posts to date count.

FUPaladin: Same with you, only 51 of your 88 posts count.

As stated, posts in Current News, Misc and War Zone don't count towards your total post count.

Any idea on how that website works? I did a search for my old squadron, and only two pictures come up from my first day of my second deployment but if I go to the picture area of www.navy.mil, there's a ton more there. Just don't understand where it comes from.

Actually I do. Not all US Navy images are selected to be DoD images. Each service maintains its own media repository and "nominates" photos to OSD. Not all are accepted. Specific photos of squadrons like you are seeking will always be more plentiful at CHINFO's Navy archive. MCs are pushing images to the Navynewsstand daily and it's a great source for relatively recent imagery. Archival images are tougher to find on-line, but they do exist. The Naval Historical Center's aviation branch has info and images by squadron, BUT if squadron doesn't submit anything (actually an annual requirement but many squadrons fail to adhere to the reg) or doesn't submit much as is usually the case, there may be little to nothing there. CHINFO's still photo branch mainly supports media requests and is who pushes images to DoD. They keep the more recent imagery around and push the older stuff to the National Archives which is very hard to gain access to due to staff reductions and their policy. Naval Institute has a pretty decent archive that they maintain for sales purposes, but if you get to Annapolis, you can usually get access to see what they have. Another source folks rarely use is the museum at Pensacola. They actually have a lot of Bob Lawson's work from his active duty and Hook magazine shooting. He still has an impressive collection as well. PM me if these sources don't get you what you're looking for and I'll dig even deeper.

That explains a lot. For some reason I saw "Navy" somewhere on the OSD website instead of actually reading "DOD." I do find it amusing that you say "they" nominate images, because the majority of the pictures are pretty lousy. But I get what you're saying.

As for images I may need...I actually have most of them. Our Fly-On pics (which you can see both at OSD and at Newsstand) were put on 3 CDs and given to us. Plus most of the deployment pics (busts and exercises) I intercepted and copied before they left the ship. My question was more academic, but I'll keep it in mind.

Use the search feature on this site (hmm, sounds familiar) and you can search by specific country, military branch, a/c, etc etc etc. Mess around with it for a while, you will figure it out.
