Thanks Matt,

Now I'm feeling pretty dumb! That made it pretty simple and clear. Good link. Once again thanks.

Dwayne.

allenazali,
the short cut to #6 is cross multiply. very simple i.e.
2/25>1/10 2*10 = 20
1*25 = 25 is 20>25... answer false
similarly
2/28<3/35 2*35 is 70 3*28 is 84 84 IS greater than 70 TRUE! not sure if that is clear... let me know if that explanation works for you.

Matt, i just took the ASTB yesterday and it was pretty simple as far as the verbal section went, all i had i can't remember the exact number but it was about 6-9 "paragraph inference" question
....basically this was.... ok lets see.......
A mountain bike store sells specific mountain bikes with warranty's. the more expensive the bike the more inclusive the warranty. thus ensuring consumers that their demands will be satisfied concerning any damage done to the bike during normal operations. By having an on site shop fix the problem without cost to the consumer with the warrantied bike the customer will have their product finished in a timely manner.
----what can be inferred from this paragraph:
a. all mountain bikes have a warranty
b. the shop will only fix bikes with a warranty
c. A warranty is offered on specific mountain bikes
d. Consumers without a warranty will not be happy with their service

That is a typical question on the test, now keep in mind i just made it up, but this kind of incorporates all the stuff you should look for before you answer to make your chances better on pickin the right one first look at
A. all mountain bikes have a warranty....false watch out for answers that say ALL or ONLY or ALWAYS or NEVER its hard to find stuff that only works one way...read the paragraph it says specific bikes not all of them
B. False...Who are you to say what that shop will fix....and once again look at the wording..uh oh we have an ONLY 9 outta 10 times false.
C. True...wow could it be...the answer written right there in the freakin paragraph...yea i know it seems weird but you'd be surprised at how often this happens and we overlook them..don't look too far into the question....don't get somethin out of it that isn't in there....that's another way to get a wrong answer.
D. False...Now this one doesn't have a giveaway word like ALWAYS etc...but ask yourself again does the paragraph give me any insight as to why a given customer may not be happy with the service...NO...so then ask again..who am i to question what quality of work the shop does

----hopefully i didn't ramble on too much about this but this is a typical example of what type of question to expect with every trick they will try to throw at you on the test.....lemme know if it helped or if i should just shutup lol

Repost of email jason12 sent me! So he doesn't have to wear his fingers out typing. Thanks again Jason...

Ok man i'll give it to you straight because i was in your situation
entirely. First off we'll start with the books, i too bought the ARCO book
because i figured it would help, after taking the test i can tell you this,
pay not as close attention to that books math, instead study the hell outta
the mechanical comprehension...as i remember....so this e-mail may be a
little sporadic but just bear with me...i'm gonna throw questions that i
remember from the actual exam that can be found in either the ARCO or the
marine...in fact i'll make a list of what i can remember at the bottom.
Anyways...back on topic...study and be able to do the marine math part
backwards in your head while blindfolded...it seriously amazed me how many
questions were taken from that damn thing...regrettably i wish now i woulda
looked at it a few more times....and when i say exact i mean that
literally... now they changed a few around as far as what values and
all...but my friend i will tell you this...there were a few questions on
that damn test that were EXACTLY the same as in the marine study
guide...lemme tell ya i was pissed when i got home and saw that. so step
number 1...know the marine guide math by heart. Step 2 the verbal
section...all i had on my test was about 9 at the most, questions on after
reading a paragraph, what you can infer from it...you get 4 choices and keep
this in mind use the process of elimination on them it helps...look at the
questions that say ALWAYS & NEVER 9 times outta 10 those can be taken with a
grain of salt cuz how many times does something ALWAYS happen..blah
blah...you get my point. this portion of the test was for me, more common
sense than anything, if you have any amount of high school english classes
or some college reading or anyhting like that you're good, so don't get
worked up if english isn't your strong point...i mean whose strong point is
English?! anyways, besides, there are only about 6-9 on the test anyways so
don't sweat em.. Step 3 mechanical Comprehension, study the **** out of the
ARCO guide it really helps, there is a piston question talkin about a small
piston versus a larger one (i believe its larger by about 3 times the
surface area) anyways that EXACT question is on the test so KNOW IT. other
stuff to hit up are pulley's and fulcrum's and levers and how they
work...once again...all covered in ARCO... another part to look at are the
turning of gears one specific question i remembered was 3 connected gears
OoO kinda imagine that diagram but add some teeth to them lol. basically
waht the question was askin was if the gear on the far left turned in a
specific direction (clockwise...counter...) what direction was the gear on
the far right turnin, there is a lot of those covered in the ARCO so like
i've already said 10 times, KNOW EM. I think the next section was like
Aviation and Nautical info...these are relatively simple and almost ALL OF
THEM are from the marine guide..so KNOW THOSE TOO. Just dumb stuff like i
studied every damn part of the plane on that damn diagram....what the test
ask me?? where is the Canard? i was happy though cuz i felt like i knew more
info than i needed, and believe me its always better to know more than
less...Some other items...hmmmm.....what type of plane is the
F-14...interceptor. What part of a rowboat is the safest place to step
into...bottom center. Runways are numbered how?...according to the first 2
digits of their compass heading. All of that is contained in the Marine
guide. But all of those questions i just listed were on the ACTUAL test not
stuff i'm copyin from the guides. so here's a break down than maybe you can
print and use as a book mark of what to study...........

Math/Verbal
-know some basic geometry functions, ie. how to get the area of a triangle,
area and perimeter of various shapes. Ability to do some basic factoring. oh
and another thing there are a crapload of word based algebra problems that
are so damn simple but soooooo damn time consuming one book i DEFINITELY
recommend goin out and gettin is also by ARCO, its called "How To Solve
Algebra Word Problems" here's the ISBN number just in case those nerds give
ya a hard time at the book store :ISBN0-02-863744-5....they can look up the
book that way and see who has it if that location doesn't. That DEFINITELY
WILL HELP YOU TRUST ME!!!.
- As far as the verbal goes...basic stuff man, don't sweat it, like i said
no difficult language or million dollar words just what can you get out of
the paragraph....the hardest part of this crap is not lookin too far into
it...simply put..if the paragraph doesn't say it or imply it...it isn't
true..that theory right there will eliminate 2-3 of the wrong answers.
-Mechanical Comprehension...ARCO mechanical comp. guide know those as almost
all of them in some way shape or form will be on the test, my idea is don't
even worry about freakin takin there little self test BS then grade
yourself, go straight to the answers and figure out how they got what they
got, that way you won't learn the wrong way first...trust me it sounds dumb
but it helps. like i said in the other paragraph...know pulley's and how and
why they work, know levers and how and why they work, and know pistons and
weight's and stuff too.
-Aviation and Nautical.....Marine guide....its all in there...you will
literally be amazed at how dead on the Marine Guide is in this section, it
almost makes NOMI look bad for not changin the format of the test up a bit
knowin this guide is runnin around....but hey...i'm not complainin.
-As for the Pilot Bio thing...i wouldn't stress over this too much as per
April 2002 that section was suspended from DQ'ing you so that's a plus...but
anyways since i'm on a rave here...answer it like you're a badass
dude....hell yea you wanna be a pilot...hell no you don't wanna take no
stupid pictures of stupid flowers...you wanna take physics and chemistry and
blow **** up...You've raced cars tons of times...(maybe not on a track but
if you've ever floored your car you're racin it ;-) You love goin fast
but.....you haven't driven recklessly cuz that's illegal....lol
all in all man it's not too bad of a test but believe me if you bust your
butt studyin it'll [ay off and hey who doesn't wanna fly, right?? and
believe me the studyin we gotta do for this thing is nowhere near the crap
we'll have to learn to go to flight school. So hopefully i have answered you
or helped you out somewhat....also hopefully i didn't write too much and get
ya all bored and crap. But considering i just took the test yesterday...you
caught me at a good point where its stilll fresh in my head and i can dump
most of the stuff i remember out.

Good Luck with the studying and if there is anything else i can help ya
with...even if its a matter of answering a how to as far as a specific math
problem goes, lemme know brotha...we're all in this together so its the
least i can do.
