Heading to Pendleton for HMLAT303. Where to live?

I'm married, but the wife will not be joining me for the RAG. I am looking for a nice place that is either 2-3 bedrooms with at least 1.5 car garage. I'm going geo bachelor but I still have all of her junk! I'm thinking of getting a place that I can have a roommate after I get settled in.

Where is a good place to look for housing?

Oceanside and Carlsbad are both relatively affordable, as well as close to Pendleton. We found our place through military by owner, and the owner is one of your IP's actually. For reference, we pay $2100 for a 3 br/2.5 ba/2 car garage house. Not exactly the most convenient location for me (being a Miramar guy), but for what we wanted (house/garage/etc), it was the most reasonably priced area.

Are your orders PCS, or TEMINS enroute?

If TEMINS enroute, the gubment will pay a pretty penny for you to live. My buddies went in on a restored victorian on the beach in Carlsbad - for $9000/month. And per diem covered it.

I will be moving to Pendleton area shortly.

How is the east side of Oceanside, near the back gate? How is the commute from Carlsbad area?

I am a little wary about getting anything even remotely close to the front gate after spending my younger days hoofing it around boot beach.

I'm at Cherry Point now.
But at Pendleton, I chose Carlsbad. Oceanside was too Marine Corps for me. Not to mention it was just shady with violence/gangs ect.

I didn't mind east of Oceanside either, but that back gate traffic during rush hour was worse than going through the front gate.

I lived in Windsor at Mirabella in Carlsbad.

We lived on Acacia Ave in Carlsbad, 2 blocks from the beach for $1700. Carlsbad was great to us, and we loved being able to walk to restaurants and grocery stores without being swamped by Devil Dogs. Encinitas or Leucadia may be a good option if you are looking for something by the water too.

For that reason is it possible to live in San Diego, PB area and commute to Pendelton or is that impossible

Can't speak to the traffic conditions going south but I like Dana Point or San Juan Capistrano on the north end of the base.

Commuting from PB is tough, figure 50 minutes or more each way. But I know some guys who do it. If you're married, you don't need to live in PB anyway...

Haven't lived there in years so don't know the situation coming in thru Fallbrook perhaps? I'd be tempted to look north at San Clemente too. Lived in the CJHP area for many years including Vista, Pala, Oceanside, PB and up in the El Toro area.

Curious to know if the old ammo depot is still there or closed and if there is access from Fallbrook? Anyone know?

There is a Fallbrook gate for access from the east.
South OC is nice, and not far from the airfield, but if you end up with a squadron that deploys with the MEU, you'll have to commute from OC to Miramar on a daily basis for several months at a time. It would be fine during 303 though.
