Having a Motorcycle in downtown San Diego

I'm about to PCS out to San Diego and I'm planning on renting a place in Downtown (Near Gaslamp/Petco). Most of the places I've been looking at offer either one or two spots per appt. in their garage. Since I will be living with a roommate I'm probably gonna need both spots for cars.

I guess my question is: are there any places that allow you to rent a third spot or have some exclusive M/C parking available, and if not, is there any general parking available downtown? I have thought about putting both my Jeep and the bike in the same spot but its a '04 FLSTFI and it kinda takes up a lot of room. I'm also assuming that the street isn't safe at night for either.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Not sure too much about San Dawg, but after living in Hawaii for 4 years with a night train I parked the bike in front of my car in a condo garage. In another condo there was dedicated motorcycle parking. Typically, it varied from condo to condo but most people who "owned" an apartment would lease their extra spot for 85-100 a month. San Diego is roughly the same cost of living so I would imagine that you could ballpark the cost, and live with one of three scenarios.

While my experience doesn't relate to Downtown San Diego, I have lived at a place that offered ONE single-car garage per apartment. When the roommates and I moved in, we asked if they had any extra garages and that we'd be willing to pay. Management hooked us up with the caveat that we'd have to give it up if the complex ever went to 100% capacity. They only charged us $20 extra per month and the guy who wanted his own garage gladly paid.

So ask if they have any empty units and if they'd let you use that unit's parking spot for a few extra dollars.

If your complex doesn't have any extra spaces they'd rent you, there are quite a few parking garages in downtown. Make sure it's someplace secure - car/bike thievery is a problem in SD.

We lived in the Market Street Square Apartments (across from Horton Plaza) and when I moved in with my husband we aquired an extra spot for my car after he sweet talked the ladies in the front office (we weren't 1st on the list). So you could try that...

Also, people parked their motorcycles in front of their cars and it seemed to work. They might even have a special spot for motorcycles, I've seen that too. I'm sure it won't be a problem finding something.

We had a lot of fun living downtown, good luck.

I've got an FLHRCI and a boxster - plenty of room for both in one space. I park the car a little cockeyed so I can pull the bike in/out without having to move the car. If they assign spots, you might want to try to get one next to a pillar or something that gives you a little extra room to the next car.

Yo I live in Market Street Square right now and I'll back up the claim that people park their bikes right in front of their cars in the regular spaces. You may stick out a little ass-end if you have something Camry-sized or bigger. I've been trying to snag an extra space for my girlfriend for a while, but she doesn't live with me so I guess that means I fall to the bottom of the waiting list.

I'll put in a plug for the complex, apartments are pretty nice and the rent is fair for downtown. Can't beat living right next to the gaslamp, and a Ralph's!

Thanks for all the advice, It was pretty much what I thought would be the case.

On another note, I looked at mkt. st. square and actually liked it a lot but unfortunately, I called them and they told me they don't have any 2br available... so I'll have to look somewhere else. Anything similar in the immediate vicinity?
