I want to know how the words Gunnery Sgt. R. Lee Ermey and Michael Moore got into the same sentance. Was Moore being compared to Pvt. Pyle?

Could have been like a cut to commercial "Here we are with GySgt R. Lee Ermey, and next Greta will talk about Michael Moore" or something.

They're re-air it, I gotta catch it.

I have it on my bookshelf, have yet to crack it. Very good?

It is incredible. It is a very moving account of the tragedy that befell the crew of the Indianapolis. It is an awsome book.

Man that was a moving book, what was equally tragic is what happened to Captian McVay, the CO. By an act of Congress a few years ago the court martial was expunged from his record, thanks to the efforts of a twelve year old boy.

The same thing happened to the crew of the heavy cruiser Houston and the light cruiser Juneau, the ship the Sullivan brothers were on. Part of the crew of the Houston was rescued by the Japanese, only to be thrown into the Japanese labor camps.

I have an original copy of Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph with Peace in the headline and just below the fold is a a picture of the Indy and story about the sinking.

My grandfather was on two different ships that went down in the Pacific the Pringle and the Stormmes. I'm still doing some family research to find out where all he went and what he did. He was a boiler tech. I never really understood why he would only share his stories with me before he died (I'm the only squid in the family now). This book also helped me to understand him better and feel closer to him.

I know a bit of stream of consciousness but this book is really moving.

Jolly Roger: Does your book have the 2001 Afterword? That's got a lot of the new info about RADM McVay in it.

Jolly Roger

Yes. I am a Pirate.
El Cid, my book is pre-2001. RADM McVay, married the Hawaiian princess, right? I thought that was a very interesting trivial fact.

I didn't catch that when I read it. The afterword pretty much follows the lobbying of the 12 year old FL school kid, McCoy and Dr. Haynes as they finally cleared McVay but the courts-martial is technically still in his record it just has a letter clearing him put on top.

waiting not so patiently for OCS...
You should also check out "The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors." Totally different than "In Harms Way," but I'll be d*mned if it doesn't make you proud of the country, the Navy, and the sailors of WWII.

Man, those guys are heros! The captain of the Johnston, I think it was, standing on the fantail mortally wound, shouting orders to the aft steering rooom because the bridge was out of action. That is courage and heroism in the face of overwelming forces and forced that superior force to stand off.
