I'm leaving for OCS soon and went in to cancel my membership. They tried sticking me with a cancellation fee. When I joined I asked about the fee and they said it was waivarable due to the military. Of course, when I pulled out my papers they did not know what I was talking about. Has anyone experienced this?

I havent had to cancel anything because of the military, but I do know that trying to cancel America Online is a b**** and a half. You end up with a bunch of Indian guys (they keep transfering you) who ask you 5,432 questions on why you're canceling and keep harassing you until you're ready to pull a Heinz Kerry and tell them to shove it (sorry...had to). It was quite a painful experience.

You're daisy if you do.
Soldier Sailors releif act. They have to let you out if you have orders. Same with leases, cell phones, etc. just call your recruiter/detailer and they'll iron it out.

They had no problem letting me out. They just wanted to bend me over for a cancellation fee. I thought about throwing the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Act out to him, but I did not know the specifics. He tried to read the contract I signed, but before I signed I informed them about my pending OCS application. I will find out more tomorrow, but either way gyms suck sweaty bean sack. This will be the last gym I ever join.

If you join something like 24 hour fitness, of course they are going to stick it too you.
I've always had the best luck with the local gym, where you can actually reason with the people.

Was it a Gold's Gym? I had some trouble with that too - they wouldn't let me out of my contract because I was within the one-year stipulated period. However, they said that if I could produce orders showing that I was being transferred to another city then my membership could be cancelled. I'm BDCP and was just moving to another town and wanted out... Anyway, if you have orders in-hand they should work with you. Good luck.

All the specifics you need to tell them is that you HAVE orders to report to none of their f#cking buisness at such and such time. They HAVE to let you out FEE FREE 30 days prior to report date. Let him know that and stand your ground man you're about to be an officer and Naval or Marine one at that!

I'm meeting with the owners tomorrow to hopefully fix it. It's not a lot of money, but it's the freaking principle. Thanks for the advice guys..
