Gun Safes

Personally I wouldn't move the guns in the safe. Accessories yes but...there is too much potential for shifting and banging since in most safes, the guns are not rigidly stored...Maybe you would be able to mail them, or have someone else mail them to you? I don't know your situation but...

As far as bolting the safe to the floor...obviously its more secure that way than not...however, the average safe small or medium safe weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 600 pounds including contents soits going to be a damn motivated SOB who carries that out of your house. Possible? Yes...but I don't see it as very likely, and feel certain that even a basic safe would have stopped my theft in Corpus...just judging by what they left.

Gun cabinets are a nice option for display and tamper prevention but provide next to no theft protection and zero fire protection...they are however, cheaper, but only when compared to a higher end safe. (Liberty, Browning etc...) If you are concerned about the outlay, I would reccomend a Homak or similar as A4's suggested above.

Last, as your collection builds, be sure to update your homeowners/renters insurance. (Honestly, check it for nearly anything...get a plasma TV? Probably not covered.) The coverage maximums for some items, firearms, electronics, jewlery etc...are shockingly low. My firearms coverage was limited to $2000 with USAA. You can of course buy more...but at a cost. Ask for discounts for safe purchase as well. Consider the NRA Endorsed insurance program. They provide $1000 in absolutely free firearms coverage to any NRA member and have the best rates on additional coverage I have found. They are also a dream to work with when the worst happens. They required substantial doccumentation, but once they got it the money was in my hand via courier in less the 24 hours and they never so much as once questioned the claim. Great people, who understand sportsmen. Support them.

That's what I figured, just covering the bases.

That makes sense. In 10 years, I've done 5 moves (about to do #6 in a few months), and while the move back to the mainland from HI was the most brutal, I've never had an issue w/ moving the guns. Then again, I only have a couple, and none are really worth much except for maybe an antique shotgun. They may end up just moving w/ the govt.

Cabinet v. safe? My vote is for the safe. IMHO, cabinets aren't going to do much except slightly hinder the rookie thief from taking your guns. Get a fire rated safe 2X as big as you need now.

I dunno if the movers will take your safe with guns.

Definitely go with a safe.

Try http://www.budsgunshop.com for some good deals, delivered.

The outside of mine...

The thickness...abouy 3/8 steel.

And even though the hinges are covered and external, there are plenty of locking bars in the door. Remove the hinges and it will still stay locked tight.

Thanks guys. My banana republic internet connection doesn't make it worth following the links now, but I'll have a look once I get back home.

I will chime in with my choice; I got an LP series safe from American Security. Ran about $600 with the GI Joe's military discount. I got one of the middle-of-the-line ones about 2ft wide; it's tall enough to hold a Mosin Nagant 1891/30, so plenty of room for guns and anything else I want secured. Fire resistant and boltable to the floor.

Unfortunately, they don't deliver, so I'm still trying to bribe some truck-owning guys with beer to help me haul it home.

For those at LeMoore or CA in general Sturdy Safe in Fresno is an option. Not many safe manufacturers compare to a fire lined Sturdy. http://www.sturdysafe.com/

Don't make wise cracks about the girl in his web site photos- (she's family). Plus you'll save the 10% insult surcharge. FBI-Customs etc. are some of his customers.

I buy NOTHING new anymore if I can help it, personal property auctions have been very good to me. Check out whats happening this February, sometimes one can steal things, sometimes you can't. Sometimes it's a feeding frenzy. They had one go last week (safe) for LESS than 100 dollars. Between my back and my wife as a sidekick it was no point so I didn't even bid. marshallauctions.com Yeah, this place will do you no good but it gives you an idea of what can be had for a song.
