Good Weapons Gouge?

TrunkMonkey

Although it's probably the last thing I should be worrying about at the moment, I'm wondering if there are any good books or websites that discuss air-to-ground weapons capabilities and employment in detail (not classified, obviously). Google works, but I am wondering if there is anything out there that would quickly answer my question of "What weapon would we use to deny use of an airfield flying at 5000 feet?" the night before a brief. Not looking for the answers to be handed to me, just wondering if any of you have found any resources that make it easier.

I'd question why you'd want to be at 5,000 feet in the first place...or is the airfield "flying at 5000 feet"?

Haha, good call. OK, the only reason we are flying at 5000 feet in this example is because it's a training route. However, it's briefed as though we were dropping bombs on the target.

You could always try out Global Security. Here's the link:

Hardly an appropriate tactical reference. If you're boning up on this stuff as part of some TRACOM scheme to seem cool, then you're a complete tool. Cease and desist. You'll learn all you need to know at the appropriate stage of your training - until then focus on what's important in the TRACOM, like not fvcking up your radio calls.

They're just trying to get you to think a little bit...

I guarantee they don't want you to weaponeer munitions at this point.

They want an answer like...."I'd use a cluster munition to take out the runways temporarily and destroy aircraft on the tarmac" or "I'd crater the runway and intersections with 500# bombs." As long as you can explain yourself logically.

They just also want to see if you'd tell them you'd like to try an AAMRAM on the runways... ):

You mean that doesn't work? I hear they're supposed to work great against big alien motherships though, like in Independence Day. :D

What Schnugg said. Anyone know of any reliable websites where I can research that type of information? I'm definitely not trying to seem cool. It's a briefing item. Considering that I don't know off the top of my head why I wouldn't use an AAMRAM, I'm just looking for somewhere to read up on it.

Trunk, Go with FAS or Globalsecurity.org. They are by no means definitive, let alone accurate, but you can at least read about the different types of weapon systems (AIM, MK-8x, CBUs, GBUs, AGMs, etc).

two words.......... tactical nukes (carried in the tip of an AMRAAM!). Seriously, a string of 4 MK series bombs centered around R/W center out of a section would work, but please be higher than 5K, unless you like being shot.

This is a brief item, yet you have no resources issued or available officially?

Just put the thing on the thing and hit the thing...any questions?

btw Look-up JSOW...it may help

Lastly, I think it's AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile)

I have never pickled once in my life, but I have heard about RAF Tornado pilots dropping a weapon called a Durandel on airfields. Its basically a runway mine the floats on a drag chute. Once impacting the runway the charge is delayed to penetrate into the concrete before detonating, and dropped in intervals along it could render it useless. Its released at relatively low altitudes, so it might work. Don't get your arss shot of at that altitude though.."Chaff, Chaff, Flare, Flare"..lol. Anyways let the TACAIR guys better inform ya if this doesn't help because they know their ****, especially the "Bombcats". Sorry I had to pay tribute to Tomcat community, and its sad to see that beautiful bird go away. Good luck Trunk Monkey, and good huntin'.
