Thought I'd share a project I recently undertook to build a going away gift for the captain in charge of my shop. If anyone knows Grits, he just retired after 26 years. Former boat school guy, A7 driver, then F18 driver, skipper, etc.
Anyhow, the gift our shop came up with was a Navy civil war era black powder pistol (they're actually pretty cheap). Since he worked in Alaska for his final tour I obtained an Alaska flag from the Governor's office, flown over the state Capitol in Juneau. Also, we rounded up a US flag flown over the US Capitol (pretty standard). We couldn't very well present him these items in the cardboard boxes they came in, nor could we afford to buy a custom shadow box that could hold all of these items... sooo, here's what I came up with.
Mind you I haven't done ANY wood working since middle school...
This one is sans lid, but has the pistol.

This is the final product.

This pic shows the walnut splines I used to reinforce the corners. The main body is red oak.

And this one I posed my Redhawk in there, just 'cause it's cool
