So, uh, what do you supposed my chances of getting jets is? I really have no qualifications, but I think it would be cool. What percentage gets jets? Do you have to be good at volleyball?

hadn't seen this question in some time, so I thought I'd bring it back for nostalgia. :icon_tong

From what i heard.....
35% Jets
10% T-props
55% Helos

The people get ranked in flight school then they get there first choice going down. So figure finish in the top 35% and u should be good for jets. ( could be wrong though )

Whats the point

Im sure you all had dreams once, im sure you all were naive once, whats the point of ripping people for no reason? We all know you are salty fleet aviators (or SNA's...) and you were born exactly that way, your mom squeezed you out in a flight suit and brown shoes and you knew it all right away...

I know it was a joke, but it bothers me that there is this attitude of "F*uck all the kids out there who wanna fly jets" on this site. This site is dedicated (in part)to informing people about naval aviation, and the fact of the matter is jets are the "sexiest" part to most people. I know it probably gets really annoying to see all the " i want jet posts" but thats no reason to poke fun at high school/ college kids who have a dream. It comes off as arrogant, and probably turns away otherwise interested young people from the military in general.

Illinijoe,
yes, this was all meant in jest. I don't think it's a big deal to poke fun at those who ask this question. I don't think anybody who is serious about flying jets is going to be turned off by such a prod. I'd hope they'd have a thicker skin. If, however, I bent anyone outta shape, they have my apologies.

I'm not sure that the primary site picks are split up on the lines of X number at each. I suspect more come from Whiting as there are 3 squadrons there vs 2 in corpus, but I really don't know. When i selected we were compared to ALL the primary guys finishing that week from all the locations.

I'm not sure why people think getting jets is the only "good option" in the Navy or USMC. Granted, you can fly mach 2 with your hair on fire in a jet, but whose to say that flying helo's wouldn't be a blast? I mean think about it...

Flying helos is much more demanding physically than planes / jets. Why do you think an Army Apache pilot goes back to the base after a few hours of flying, when the Air Force can fly a bomber half way around the world to bomb a target, then fly back?

I'm the first one to admit, I have no flying experience... but I just don't see where people get off thinking helo's are a bad or last case option. I think flying helo's would be just as much as a challenge, if not more than flying jets or T props. Obviously, speed, G's and other things make the jets and planes more noteworthy, but nevertheless regardless of what you're flying, you're still flying. If you don't think helo's can fly extremely fast or upside down check this out.

All I'm sayin is if you're accepted into naval aviation, you're gonna have a helluva good time. People shouldn't be worried about what they're assigned... they should be greatful for anything they're trained to fly, especially since a cargo plane fulla rubber dog**** outta Hong Kong aren't any of the options. :)

Face it man (or woman), flying is what its all about right (after being an officer)?? Who cares what you're assigned!!

Cheers,

Rob
