GOUGE GeoBach in Norfolk - Questions

MPRA guy posted at NAS Jax. As karma for all those Marriott Bonvoy points from deployment, the Navy has elected to involuntarily reposition me to Norfolk. I spent some time there in January and found the city to be pretty fun. The problem is that my wife has a grown-up job that's important to both of us, so she'll be staying in Jacksonville.

Looking for insights from these types:
  1. People who previously geo-bached in Norfolk, and
  2. People who moved to Norfolk and had any "if I'd been single, here's how I would've done it" moments.
There's a direct Breeze flight that runs six days a week, so I'm aiming for a minimum-impact setup where I can drop everything and head home on short notice. Any lessons learned, housing recommendations, or things you'd do differently?

I was HSC in Norfolk from 2012-2016 and have been back through for a couple multi-week stints since between schools and reserves. Also geobached for 2 years between Bahrain and DC during COVID. Newer folks please correct me if I’m wrong.

Life wise, you’re correct that you’ll be essentially single and hanging with similarly situated JOs. Goes without saying but don’t brag about any fun if spouse is back home single parenting. (This is good advice for airlines as well)

Living: Ghent or downtown if you want to limit your commute pain and have walkable stuff. East Beach or Chicks Beach if you want the more beachy vibe. Do not put a bridge or tunnel between you and work. (Worth checking if your boat will be in the yards, as those are Portsmouth or Newport News which will make life more difficult.) Drive wherever you want to live at night, many places had a distinct vibe shift.

Geobach stuff: Hopefully your sponsor will give you the command temperature on GeoBachers. Some leadership has done it and knows the special hell it is, and allow permissive TDY/special liberty to see family without burning leave. Some might treat you like an E-3. I wasn’t a boat dude but you’ll have to contend with duty sections for any of that.
