General HSM Questions

Hi all, first post as a member but I've lurked on the forums for a while. Currently in primary and heavily leaning towards rotary. I know it's a long ways off and I have plenty of IP's brains to pick, but I've seen a few threads on here where the current state of HSC is heavily discussed but not much about HSM. Was wondering if any Romeo guys could talk about:

1) General enjoyment of day-to-day flying and quals
2) Direction of the community given current (i.e. Red Sea) and potential future threats (does it feel like HSM has a firm identity in the picture?)
3) If you feel Romeos are utilized effectively/correctly within the CVW and/or DESRON
4) Big differences between CVW and EXPED deployments and routine ops

Feel free to pontificate on other things if you have the time or inclination, those are just a few things that came to mind reading other threads.

Thank you!

Did you say you have IPs who fly Romeo’s who can answer these questions?

I'm a recent helo advanced winger. IPs in the HTs were more willing to give insight to their respective communities (HSM vs HSC, Exped vs Carrier, etc.) than my IPs in primary. The IPs in the HTs also seemed more motivated about rotary flying so I wouldn't let the VT IPs or sim instructors discourage you about helos if that's what you're experiencing.

You should generally stay out of aviation specific threads.

Respectfully, unless the conversation went to a private forum or DM, I figured my response would have been somewhat helpful than no one commenting at all.

Usually a school (enlisted) or designator specific training (officer), yes while you’re job is to learn your job, instructors also have an unofficial due diligence to provide mentorship and guidance to the next generation of warfighters.

This isn’t just aviation specific, this is overall general Navy and mentorship.

100% agreed if OP is asking NATOPS, I Bar, how to do a barrel roll in a T-6, etc. yes not in my swim lane.

Respectfully, telling a poster who comes to this site to get opinions about specific aviation communities that they should “ go talk to their IPs” is contrary to the reason this site exists, and reveals your ignorance about the demographic of who winds up as TRACOM IPs… which is why you should avoid giving advice for things for which you lack experience and any semblance of credibility.

Instead of trying to put me in check for trying to help the OP find answers (when no one was responding), perhaps you ought to use that aura to qualified members here (131X helo pilots) to help him or her out.

If there were responses, feedback, and/or discussion on the OP’s post then yes I have no purpose or need to respond.

The biggest offense here is you implying that all VT/TRACOM IPs are dirtbags.

Telling the poster to go find the answers in real life is almost as patronizing as telling a poster to use the search function.

Also, Brett didn't insinuate they were dirtbags. He insinuated that for many reasons, they are not the best resource to weigh in for items 2-4 from the OP.

How is asking follow on questions patronizing? Just like how OP has every right to post and ask questions, is the audience allowed to do the same?

It’s patronizing if I were to tell him/her, “Hey why don’t you ask your instructors, you idiot”.

Can’t have your cake and eat it too. Also, if Brett saw if my info was terrible, he could have DM’d and discussed it offline, what grown ups/wardroom members do. I get he’s retired now, but I assumed he probably still remembers “The Rules”.

Damn we’re really catching strays here.
Not bashing anyone, and I know there are some community nuances at work, but I think most people understand where the VTs break out in terms of perceived value to the NAE as a production tour. Not my rules, or preference, but it is the reality.

So what does that have to do with the topic at hand? We’re bitter PERS-losers so OP shouldn’t bother asking us about our own communities?
