Garand Problems

I went out to shoot my M1 today, but I had a problem. The standard HXP M2 wouldn't chamber completely. This is the first time shooting the rifle. I removed the round and brushed out the chamber and put the ruptured case extractor through for good measure. Now the extractor is stuck and the bolt is stuck shut. I couldn't get through to CMP today, so I thought I'd ask here if anyone had ever had an experience like this. The bolt did not rotate when it went forward either time.

I've not seen this happen before. If the chamber wasn't blocked when you tried to put a round up the spout it almost sounds like there may be a problem with the op rod or maybe the bolt is not properly mating with the receiver.

I know it sounds extreme but if you really have to get the action open you can actually use a rubber or plastic mallet to whack the op rod and open it. I've even seen it done by putting the but stock on the ground and using your heal to kick it open. Garands are almost indestructible. (you can force them open but I'd NEVER try to force one closed)

That said, you aren't in combat and you don't HAVE to open the action now so I would post your question here: http://www.jouster.com/cgi-bin/garand/garand.pl

The people that post on this site can answer your questions. You will get answers asap. They know the Garand inside and out. This is a fantastic site for any Garand owner.

Your can also ask here: http://www.m14tfl.com/upload/index.php . You may have to register to post and it's mostly an M14/M1A site but there is a good Garand section as well.

You can also post your question on the CMP Forum. But Jouster may be quicker.

No matter what CMP will make things right when you do get to them.

Back in November. About five minutes after posting, I was able to get it open with some force. It seems like it might be a headspace issue.:(

Of course it goes without saying that you don't want to try and shoot it again under any circumstances until you have someone check it out. If the headspace is that bad it could fire out of battery. Digging brass out of your face is no fun.

CMP could be on holiday break I don't know. They will make it right. The biggest pain will be shipping it back to them if it comes to that. I would call and send emails to them. My experience with their customer service has been first rate.

Let us know how it turns out

I brushed out the chamber again, and low and behold the round now chambers. It shoots pretty well too.

Glad to hear. Keep inspecting it for the near future just to ensure that its "fixed" and didnt accidently start functioning properly.

Imagine that!! A clean chamber and it functions? Will wonders never cease? I was going to suggest a go/no-go gauge check but you have apparently cured the problem.
The M-1 Garand is one of my favorite rifles and I did a lot of competition shooting them while still on active duty USMC. Even won a few matches when I made less mistakes than the other shooters. Probably the one I am most proud of was a 2nd Master 1000 yard iron sight at the CA State Championships in '59. Also won the Arizona State Championships in rapid fire but that was a fluke (I think) although I later did OK in the pistol shoots.
Have fun with your M-1. Its a legend and probably the best battle rifle ever developed.
