FY2018 O-4 Board

Planning to depart knowing you will put on O-4 and potentially look at three deployments versus knowing you will FOSx2 and get a nice severance, versus a “don’t pick me” and no severance are three very different COA’s.

It’s rare you have any control over your career in this line of work, but to hand what control over out of some misguided politeness to your “shipmate” is just fucking stupid.

I’d never tell one of my LT’s to volunteer that information before they were actually willing to pull the handle and get out. Play your cards close to the vest, leave ALL of your options open.

And that severance will give you options, especially if you need to go to a regional or you're headed to the private sector. Down payment on a house, ability to be picky about your new job, time off before the next phase of your life, etc. etc. Options are good things to have, and high five figures cold cash gives you them.
 
@picklesuit and @nittany03, you both are exactly right.

I went down the FOSx2 path; however, I didn't submit any correspondence saying don't pick me or similar. In fact, I submitted letters to the board with information to get promoted.

To anyone trying to figure out their future or going down the FOSx2 path, keep your options open. Plan for all COAs, in and out of the Navy, and be ready. My wife and I had those options ready, so when the FOSx2 thing came through we had a plan. It helped and made the transition easier.

On another note, if you are leaving the Navy or going down the FOSx2 path, look very hard at joining the Reserves. I did for many reasons, but it is worth it. I just went through a layoff (starting new job next month!), but the reserves have been awesome in the situation. I was able to pick up extra drills and help the unit out allowing me to keep cash flowing in while searching for a new job.
