I worked at Lockheed on the JSF program for 3 years. Things might have changed since I left, but the Marine Corps has always been slated for the F-35 B (STOVL) variant, and only the STOVL variant. Several articles I've read also report the Marine Corps wanting to go to an all STOVL force (aside from C-130's).

The Air Force reportedly is looking at the STOVL variant because they were impressed with the forward operating capabilities of the Harrier in OIF and since they are trying out the whole idea of "expeditionary" - they are looking to get a piece of the pie.

That's what I'd heard, and is what prompted this thread.
