Friend was blindsided during physical

Gents, a buddy of mine recently went in for the full flight physical before commissioning, however they said (and was confirmed by an ophthalmologist today) that he has Granular Corneal Dystrophy and he was denied not only for flight duty, but the doc said the USMC doesnt even allow you to commission if you have this condition. It really sucks because he is about 3 months from graduation and now doesn't have anything lined up. So I was wondering given the vast knowledge and experience of this board if anyone has heard of this, if its for sure a 100% done deal, if there is a wavier, or well just any hope for commissioning at all.
