In the Army, that type of person is always an ex POW Green Beret. You know, the one that escaped after all his team members were killed in Viet Nam, on a " Top Secret " mission. The kind of mission that is so secret that is not possible to be documented in his 201 file or any official record. Not quite so secret that he can't talk about it in a bar, to a reporter, to strangers on the street....

I saw this in the Navy Times... what a bastard. Why can't these guys at least make it halfway realistic and keep us on our toes? Instead, some kid straight out of boot made E-4 with 4 rows of fruit salad?? Come on!

Not sure if it's true... but, I heard about a guy showing up to OCS with a few rows, including a Navy Cross without having a day of prior service. When confronted he said, "you can buy 'em at the NEX and I thought they looked nice." At least his ignorance played a roll. I'm not sure what these past two corpsman were trying to do.

That's hilarious. I wouldn't know whether to laugh or hit the kid. Probably both, but the later would probably get me kicked out of the Navy.

Falsifying rank or duty position

Marines, Navy guys...Former Army Pilot here.
Does anyone know how I can verify a 'former' marines actual rank and MOS?
Is there an official site. Used them all to date...no luck
Claiming to be Officer when we beleive he was enlisted.
Claiming to be a Pilot when we think he was a helo crewchief.

I liked the posts. Former Army Helo guy here, been there on the bonus BS> and can identify.

PLEAE Help me flush out a guy who we in the civilian helo world believe is lying...or exaggerating.

He claims to be a former 53 driver. He wont show us anyting..like a DD214 and we can legally ask. We think he was a crew chief...posing as a Marine Captain. All the stories and nothing to show it. No Wings..etc.

Anyone know a website or a process that will allow us to find out some facts, about his service. Rank, MOS, duty station. Or confirm it?

You could ask to see his DD-214. Without knowing who you are and why you want to know I think most would be reluctant to help even though we love to out fakers. Just need some more info i.e. What does he claim to fly? Years he was in?, etc.

Is this for employment purposes or general edification? If for employment, by all means, make him show relevant documents, e.g. the DD-214, his commission, etc. If for just personal satisfaction, by all means call him out and ask him to see the same.

This is a pretty good website for reference. It is geared mainly toward's P.O.W.'s, but it gives guidance on how to request DD-214's and find other info through the FOIA or other means.

If the guy is not willing to show documentation so that he can be properly vetted, tell him to STFU with the stories.

Any self-respecting Officer would not think twice about providing you with appropriate documentation.

Reading in to your "we can legally ask" comment, I'll assume he used he past as a basis for his current employment, which has its own legal recourse.

Or Coast Guard, they seemed to get a lot too. A few JG's showed up at API when I was there with 4 or more rows.

Us USCG JG's are just that damn good... I'd be interested to see the service histories for those w/ 4+ rows (prior enlisted service??)


(and to be realistic- It's not hard to have 2 plus rows after an operational unit- NDR,Pistol,Rifle, Sea Service, and an Letter of Commendation or Achievement Medal if you did good things at your first unit. Lots of us current JG's also got the Presidential Unit Citation due to Katrina)
