Do not live at The Gates of West Bay outside of Gate 4. Dont let the short distance from NOB fool you, this place is horrible. Just take my word for it.

No offense, but it would take a lot more than being located within walking distance of the Naval Station to make that place appealing. The fact that it is in a bad neighborhood, and frequented by young and often immature and inconsiderate sailors is enough to steer me away.

well then i took the wrong read and heed (never was one) so thats why i'm passing it down. my command is within walking distance and i was only going to be here for a few months. I've already suffered enough here, just trying to help others out..take it or leave it.

Been there, done that.
I hated being stationed in the Hampton Roads area. My command was great but everything else sucked. Housing was a *****, at least when I was there ~6 yrs. ago. There wasn't much even available, and what was was way overpriced, and/or sub-par. We ended-up renting a townhouse in Virginia Beach, paying more than it was worth, and the landlady ripped me off!

rare...I'm so sorry. I'm not renting there, but I bought a house in what has turned out to be a not-so great part of town. My realtor insisted "you probably won't like it here too much" but I wouldn't listen.

Don't fret too much...there are other nice places in town. Are you going to stay here after the RAG?

And if you need a safe place to keep some of your stuff, I have a garage with tons of room.

Hey Road, thanks for the offer but i'm gone in May (thank God). their supposed "military clause" still has me pay for another month due to a termination fee. Thats one BS military clause. I'm just smacking my head because I should have read it closer. When I was looking for a place close to base everything was booked up so I took what I could get. But now i'd rather have driven an hour to get to work than live here. Spread the word!

No worries rare. You going west coast? I like it here because this is what I know, and I know I can afford a house here. In fact, unless you count my time in P'cola, I've pretty much home steaded here since I've been in the Navy.

Speaking of apartments near Norfolk, does anyone have any good ones? That are cheap? I go to school at ODU which is right down the road from NOB and I need something that I can afford on a meager college salary.

Although conventional wisdom is that houses in Cali are more expensive, it seems to me, through some admitted limited research, the prices for new construction homes in Hanford, CA are cheaper than Oceana, VA. Appears that new 3 bedroom/2 bath homes in Hanford can be rented for about $1,000/mo. Seems that in the lastest round of BAH "adjustments" they reduced single BAH for the Lemoore area?

Is this correct or have the limes affected my grey matter?

Military clauses are a thing of the past. The SCRA of 2003 says all you have to do is provide 30 days notice upon receipt of PCS orders and you can terminate the lease. Get a copy of the law and show it to your landlord.

I just moved into Breezy Point. It's fairly cheap, and I'm just up here for the RAG, so whatever. It's off Hampton BLVD near the Navy Federal and Navy Lodge. Seems alright so far. I was looking for cheap and close to base, since I'm not going to be here but for a few months.

is that the place that you had to go down a real narrow road to get to? If so I tried there and it looked ok but they had nothing available when i tried to get in. Still even while here for the RAG, if the place sucks life will suck especially if you have a family.

I live in a beach condo with private access on Ocean View Ave. The rent is well below BAH with a roomate and I deal with a local landlord, not a corporation. If you drive up and down Ocean View you'll see tons of for rent signs, many by private landords.

Oh, and my commute to base is 10 min.
