Most of the stuff on this site is geared towards people who want to put themselves on track for a CO/XO spot. What about those of us who don't care about that? I don't plan on staying in after my committment, and not making O-4 wouldn't even be that big of a deal. This is not to say I won't work hard and learn, but I won't be the one constantly competing to get the top tier / pain in the ass / fast track billets. What are some cool billets out there that will be a blast, but not necessarily ones that will set you up for a 20 year career? NROTC instructor, etc?

Way to set your sights on mediocrity. ;) How about watch officer at NSGA/Women's Prison? I hear Timmy could use some help.

Do NOT be the guy walking around saying "I don't want to do 20, I don't care..."

Even if you're a stellar performer, you'll be seen by the front office as a "waste of a good billet" and risk getting sent to a crap job in Stankistan or the Arctic Circle.

Play the game, keep your cards close to chest, and be a "go-to guy" in some aspect of the squadron, such as systems or tactics.

One the one hand, Skippers have their pick and know who they're going to push for career billets, so don't sweat it. On the other, fvck around and pay the price. If you aren't seen as a competitor and you bring nothing to the table, YOU WILL GET HOSED. Stack the deck in your favor and PLAY THE GAME.

Can you say TSC Keflavik Det Thule? On the other hand, I've been told that Eskimo P is mighty cold, plus polar bear jerky, you can't leave bear jerky out of the equasion. :icon_boun

What's with all the cold stuff here? You might get a warm spot. And I don't mean Hell, at least not in the traditional sense. One of my classmates got GCA Watch Officer @ NAF Midway. I kid you not. But then, unlike AW STUDs (as in student) .. he had a GAF attitude and was a lousy pilot.

Don't want to do 20 years ... ??? Neither did I, after 9 years. That's another story. But for one so young and innocent, such as yourself ?? *sigh*

Let's see --- so you want kicks, you say??? How about Tetrahedron Officer @ NAS Adak?? It was always a favorite back-in-the-day for "non-career" types who were man enough to say it ..... seriously, it was a "cool billet" ...... and I hear a "blast" as well. :)

I think a better way to word the original question would be "What shore billets are available that are cool, but might not be seen as career enhancing?"

Wow, easy guys. I was not trying to give the impression that I want to be a dirtbag, I have every intention of working my ass off and being the "go to guy." I just would like to know what some cool shore jobs would be that would not necessarily be seen as career enhancing? Thank you.

I think most of us were kidding ... I was. Maybe the real lesson here is to give it some time before you burn any bridges and close any doors. You will learn what the "cool" jobs are as you go along. It changes like the seasons ...

You're just getting started.

I had a buddy that had a GAF attitude, but he was a great pilot and officer. Ended up getting all the great billets in the squadron, and the command spent half their time trying to get him to stay in. It all depends on the person, and how you carry yourself in the squadron.

That's right SWO-breath ... we're so bad, we're good.
Ahh A4's, gotta love you because, well....old people say funny things sometimes.

My comment that you so graciously responded to (I feel honored that you took the time to make a few key strokes on your trusty 'puter) was really a put down on both communities.

I've just never really understood the infatuation with making sure you get the "right" billet or kiss ass with the top dog (e.g. CO). SWO's are not so much into getting the "right" billet. All of our billets (DH types) tend to be on the difficult side. But hey, smoozing with the CO on the bridge....you'd be amazed how many folks would rather do that than get some rack time. Yea, yea, I know, this topic has come up before and will probably come up again in 6 months or a year. Some say you just can't make it unless you kiss ass.....oops, I mean, play the game. Of course, I heard that more from aviators (on AW and elsewhere) than I have from SWO's.
