That sucks...Flying/Riding Navy is probably the best gig out there other than porn star and pro athlete..The civilian market is terrible right now regardless of major. Have you thought about law enforcement?

I agree with trying to redes during this current economic climate...save some cash and get a masters out of the way to buy some time. A SWO officer is still leadership and a good pay check doing good work. I guess to each his own. Good luck.
 
I know Criminology is useless. That's why I would be going back to school. Porn star might be an option still :D, and yes, Federal Law Enforcement is something else I have considered. Either way, I have a lot of thinking to do in very little time. My biggest concern was the money issue, which I've already gotten the answer to. Whether I get to stay in or get separated, I know I can make it work out for me in the end. Thanks for the replies, gents.

I know someone that knows a porn star. Unsurprisingly, it's not as amazing as it sounds. Now pro-athlete on the other hand, probably pretty nice lifestyle.
 
As a Career Navy guy and an NFO I have one question:

How did you come to the conclusion that you DID NOT want to be an NFO without even one NFO graded event in VT-10? On what did you base your decision?

You may be a victim of losing the only guarantee you had from the Navy. I feel bad for the 10 guys or gals that fought to get the opportunity to fly as an NFO.

What it basically comes down to is that I was never given an opportunity to seek another career path after finding out I was NPQ for pilot. I was initially qualified after being selected for STA-21 and i just couldn't understand how my eyes deteriorated that much in 2 years (Exophoria). I was given NFO simply because I still qualified. I know a lot of people would kill for an NFO spot, so being in that position I was grateful. I waited patiently for a year and a half in the hopes that additional tests would actually find me qualified since I thought the last eye exam was a fluke, only to get the definitive answer from NOMI that I had zero chance of being a pilot, and I think that is where it really hit me.

During API I could not shake the thought that I would be working my ass off for the next couple of years for something that I never really wanted and I had a hard time focusing on my studies because of that. I know I'm taking a chance here with not being re-designated, but I'm willing to take the risk.

And yes I've heard all the arguments for sucking it up and how I would enjoy my job as an NFO. I talked to 3 NFO's, all from different communities, while my paperwork was routed through NASC, and I simply could not see myself in their shoes.

If people on this board disapprove of my decision, well they're entitled to their opinion, and to those who are concerned with my future in the Navy (or as a civilian), I'm very confident that no matter what becomes of this I will find a way to succeed. :)
 
Well, when you show up to your first ship as a SWO trainee, you'll "be working your ass off for the next couple of years for something that you never really wanted". Good luck with that, let me know how it works out. BTW, I'm sure your next CO will not accept your DOR, but there are certainly other ways to quit the Navy.

Per Diem, I'm not sure what you're looking for here. Never mind that you quit for some seriously immature reasons and gave up a great opportunity...shit, your chances of redes'ing to pilot at some point were at least fair, in the TRACOM or after your first Fleet tour. Why did you decide to DOR before checking out what would happen to you next? Even basic questions whether you'd have to pay back your education, or your redes prospects, etc. You sorta lept off the cliff without checking for water depth and jagged rocks, my man. If you're expecting anyone here to tell you that was a good idea, you're not going to get it.

If it's still within your means to un-ring that bell, do it. Tell StuCon you were drunk or depressed or it was your evil twin or something.
 
There is no chance of me re-designating to pilot after my fleet tour because I was found NPQ. The only reason I posted here was to find out if anyone knew what I would owe the Navy, money wise, if I was separated instead of re-designated. I know it seems like I jumped off a cliff, so to speak, but I really do feel like there are plenty of options out there for me, so this isn't the end of the line. I have the full backing of my family, friends, and senior officers I have served with in the past. As for the SWO thing, I started my career as an undesignated deck seaman on a FFG, so I'm pretty sure if it came down to it, I could handle the SWO misery.

Let me see, you DOR'd for NFO, you admittedly didn't care enough about college to learn anything legit and decided to party instead, you seem more concerned about being forced to pay back your tuition that the Navy paid for instead of staying in the military, and at this point you seem really picky about the job you get to do if they decide to keep you.

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out...wait a minute, go ahead and let it.

Let me see, you've been commissioned for a full year now. Wow,your vast experiences in the Navy must mean that your opinion actually means shit to me. Go back and read my posts and you'll see that my intention is not to get out of the Navy. If I wanted that, all I have to say is that I don't want to be re-designated and it's a done deal. I have every right to be somewhat selective of what I want to do for the Navy in the future. Whether I get a certain job or not is not up to me, but rather the force shaping board, and I know that I will owe the Navy whatever amount of time. I'm simply trying to prepare for the 'what if' scenario in the case that I am not retained. Do you have a fucking problem with me being concerned about my future financial situation? Get off your pedestal and stop thinking I actually owe you something because guess what, I fucking don't.

Little harsh there, Chuck. I would have felt like a tool saying that from my point of view (and I'm a little further down the road than you).

Go ahead and cut him a little slack, if for no other reason than that you may want/need some at some point in life.
