Fixed wing transition in USMC

If you get helos out of flight school, can you apply for a fixed wing transition? How long does it take? Is it a popular request? What kind of performance is needed to be approved? Is this something one could plan for or only hope for?

Most years there are 2, maybe 3 helo to strike and helo to C-130 transitions available. They're for captains who have successfully completed, or are close to completing a fleet tour. Once you're in helos, you won't worry about transitioning, anyway. If you still insist on it, they are competitive, but not impossible to get. I don't know if I could go back to being a pogue--"Go redo these maps, stud!" Especially considering I have as much, if not more, real-world experience than the instructors.
