First Time Scores

I just took the ASTB computerized version and scored 5/5/6 52. I have 3.16 GPA in Civil Engineering. I will be able to take the test one more time before my package gets submitted but am worried that if I do worse on that one I will be forced to submit those scores. Does anybody have an idea of what the needs of the Navy are right now and if my stats are good enough to get picked up for SNA?

I don't have any idea as to the "needs of the navy" for SNA, or any other for that matter. But for someone who may know, you might want to give them more details as to the strength of your ap.
What school, strength of LORs, prior service if any, etc...?

Apply and find out. The boards are weird and might take someone with a low GPA, but they have something else that pops out and they take notice to.

I just listened to my recuriter and did what he told me to do. I would say do the same and take a risk.

I had a lower GPA, but my ASTB scores were 7/7/7/62 so I would recommend re-taking the ASTB. Higher scores can't hurt. I'm a SNA now.

I think this is for his service selection... ie his job in the Navy after his commission out of NROTC (Navy already owns him)

Your unit might be able to give you rough idea of how your scores compare to previous selectees from your school.

Your in a tough spot, You did make the mins though (provided you aren't a Marine)- I guess you have to ask yourself if you think you'd do better a second time... thats something you have to decide. Among other things- Your scores could go up and you not get accepted, down and you get accepted or stay the same and things could go either way. The ASTB is just one thing they take into account in your package. Your unit should have the breakdown of the weight each thing carries.

I got SNA it with a 4/5/3 40something...I wasn't the lowest scoring person, but I was one of the lower ones I knew of at the time. Almost everyone who wanted SNA from my unit got it that year, minus one who had a crap GPA... IE was on permanent MANDO study and they sent him SNFO. It seemed like the Navy was taking everyone who wanted aviaition my year... turns out they took too many and made active attempts to attrite members of my year group in API. Not everyone from my Unit who got selected as a SNA still is (One is a FO because they got NQP'd and another works at some nuclear powerplant somewhere because they got shafted in API)

Your gonna need to be able to look at back on your decision and be able to live with it... Only you can figure out what the right move is for you.

Ya, I was a little confused by the bio as well. If this is for service selection as a mid then I can't help you much. But from what I have heard, those numbers might be ok.

I think you are now a OCS applicant though, specifically BDCP. For BDCP those ASTB numbers are a bit low. Your GPA isn't all that low for an engineering major. For a straight OCS app they are looking better. Still, I'd agree with the one post above. Submit it as it is and see what happens. If you non-select you can resubmit and THEN take the ASTB again. You are real close, so just go with it unless your recruiter advises differently. Good Luck!

Good luck! ...if you decide to retake it. I'm taking it for the first time this mon. guess i wont be doing any of :icon_zbee this weekend. but if you get turned down with the scores you have now... at least it will look good when you resubmit with new scores (persistence).

If I were you, I would seriously think about taking the test once more. Take a good week, 2 or 3 hours each day of which to study the gouge on this website and pick up one of the study guides. Take the practice tests, be 100% proficient on the spatial apperception, and brush up on your math skills. Thats what I did for a week. No prior flight time, just a degree in Polysci and I ended up with an 8/8/8 67 OAR.

Its only a week or two of dedicated stuying, for an entire career.

JP, those scores are for the Navy? I got 7/7/6 62 and Staff Sargeant said it was good to go. I thought there was room for improvement but hey, he's happy, I'm happy.

ya he said my OAR was too low. u have a higher OAR so thats probably why. Im applying for Navy OCS (SNA).

I see, it was probably the physics that got you. I know when I took the practice tests I must have missed a third of the mechanical questions. For me I think it was the aviation and nautical info that I could have improved on, just stuff that you would know if you served on a boat which I hadn't.

Did the supplemental portion count for anything as far as the OAR, PFAR, etc. go? I got all math problems but one of the OSOs said to just breeze through it because the Marines don't consider that portion.

I just took the test this morning and got a 7/7/6 61 for USMC OCC. The Staff Sgt. said that was very good, and also told me that only about half the people pass on the first time from what he has seen.
