At 1547 local (22May08), N901FD, the first "purple tailed" Boeing 757 touched down on runway 27 at Memphis International Airport.

New for us... Replacing our 727s.. They are Passenger to Freighter converstions.. I think a bunch came from USAir, not sure where all the others are coming from.. Various leasors and such...

Sweet. It will be a sad day when the Jurrasic Jet is no longer in service. What a great airplane. I thought they would never die. I had a chance to fly a charter on one down to Cancun a few years back. It was like going back in time. The flight deck looked just like the E-6 used to.

I don't think it had anything with dying... It had to do with fuel costs.. For the last few years, FEDEX has been using the baby bus (A-310) to cover those lower markets but bigger than 72 markets, but that pays widebody pay; so they were in the process of getting 75s for those markets. But given the cost of gas, accelerating the 757 and replacing the 727 makes more sense... It is a down market and volumes are down a bit, Fuel Costs, Age 65 and others just made the company go into $$$ savings mode and that is why the DC-10 and 727 retirement schedules have been moved up, IMHO... Granted we will get the -10s back as MDs but the converstion will take a couple of years and buys time for the economy to get better...
