Filipinos in the navy/usmc

Funny this thread came up. My dad was the typically filipino recruited out of P.I. and became an MS, then MSC, then CWO4. 29.5 years in the Navy. Lots of my uncles are/were Chiefs. So expectations are high being that I was the first to get commissioned an officer. But its an honor to represent my filipino-american heritage as a naval officer. BTW, I know how to make lumpia Balut = nasty! Yuck. Still grosses me out.

let me refrase what I said earlier as I realize it sounded a bit pretentious: allow to replace the word "leading" with "working with". better now?
Here's the truth, my girlfriend is Filipina and she and I are planning a trip to the PI sometime in the future. I enjoy spending time with her family so I was thinking of taking a tagalog course because that's the dialect they speak.
I was curious if I'd have the opportunity to practice while I'm out in the fleet, or if it'd just be something for at home.
hence the question.
