So I was at a mess dress event tonight and saw an AF O-5 with pilot wings and miniature Naval Aviator wings on as well. Thought maybe I could get a story or two out of him about his experience:

Me: "Sir, you were an exchange pilot?"
O-5: "yup."
Me: "What'd you fly?"
O-5 "Hornet."

Then he went back to drinking and the "convo" went dead.

Is this normal for a fighter guy, or is this another air forceism?

I have known a couple of USAF exchange pilots who proudly wore Naval Aviator wings with their silver ones if they landed on the boat. Same deal with prior Navy guys in the Air Force, who had originally earned their wings in the Navy.

Unless he invited you over 'cause he wants to be your Daddy, or unless you're buyin' .... what did you expect???

I would have farted and walked away ... :)

I know a guy that flies the U-2 after switching from the Navy. He flew F-14s in the Navy and proudly wears both sets of wings.

A lot of guys now flying in the ANG used to be AD Navy, and wear both.

I know some USMC Naval Aviators who got their initial "wings" in the Air Force ... but they never wore their Wings of Lead.

Funny how it works ... :)

And since none of you have figured it out ... YES .... this is quite normal.

Fighter jocks "talk" with their hands ... not their mouths. And if you are drinking, the chit-chat becomes even more problematical.

I was once asked "what time is it??" at a party ... I looked at my watch and promptly dumped my beer on the head of one of the wives seated next to where I was standing ...

"What time was it"???

It was time for her to leave .... :)

Talk or drink --- take your pick .... you can't do both.

*sigh* .... rookies ....

Wearing wings for just an exchange tour seems so Air Force...any chance to have all manner of geegaws pinned/hanging on their chest. Badges for everything, ferChrissakes!

Sure, prior service I can see keeping your wings, but for an exchange tour it seems strange.
