Favorite Golf Courses

Combating TIP training AGAIN?!
Where are some favorite places to play a round? Specifically I am looking for preferences around duty stations.

Here are some of my favorites for when I was stationed at Whidbey.

Eaglemont Golf Course. Mt.Vernon’s finest. This is a challenging 18-hole championship course with awesome scenery. Green fees are around $50 which is money well spent.

Similk Beach Golf Course. Just a few minuets drive from downtown Anacortes, this was one of my favorites because it was close, cheap, and a decent course. Green fees are $39 on weekends, but they have really great specials during the winter.

USNA Golf Course. Its a good course to play if you ever get stationed in the DC/B-More area. Can't remember how much it costs, but its a fun and challenging round of golf. Not alot of water, but there is some. The snack bar is conveniently located between holes 9 and 10.

The front nine is compacted... long holes, but it goes out and in, out and in, lots of adjacent fairways... The back nine is more spread out... no adjacent fairways as far as i remember.

If you get stationed in the Philly area, (not much of a Naval presence there, but some), theres Mountain View just outside of Trenton, NJ. Another somewhat fun and challenging course. Haven't played it since 2001, but its a good course. Its about a 30 minute hike from NAS Willow Grove.

Whiting has so far been the longest I ever played 480, 430 par 4 with a 600 monster par 5. with that said AC Read isn't too bad.. I like the courses back home in Lexington.

Ponte Vedra...Ocean or Lagoon Course. Amelia Island Ocean Links. Royal Amelia.

Golf is the only thing I miss about the greater NE FL SE GA region.

I still haven't had the chance to play Whiting. I've played all the holes on AC Read, and I likey.

I'm up for a long course.

In Monterey....courses that you can actually afford would be the two courses on the old Army fort (Ft Ord) just north of Monterey. Decent prices for military, something like 30 or 40 if I remember, and it's in really great shape, good walking course, and fun to play. The wind can be a factor though, since it's almost right on the Pacific.

That said, there's Pebble Beach but for some reason I just couldn't justify dropping $450 just for the greens fees.

OK, if you haven't played Whiting (and you're an SNA) you're WRONG. There's something to be said for having a T-34 landing that's fucking up your backswing.

Favorite courses:
Camp Lejeune - it's gorgeous, and military (so it's cheap)
USNA - Very challenging, and military (so it's cheap)
NAS Pensacola - Nice course, lot of water, and military (so it's cheap)
MCB Quantico - absolutely beautiful, and military (so it's cheap)
No, Whiting is not a favorite - it's not that good a course, and not well kept up.

Other than those - if you're looking to play a civilian course and are statonied in the DC area... I recommend Queenstown Harbor Golf Links. It's a public course (i.e. - cheap) but GREAT. The only problem is that if you suck (i.e. - slice, hook, shitty drive, etc...) you could end up hitting your ball into a protected waterland and not even be able to hunt for it. Not that I have... ;)

If you're a newly comissioned Ens/2ndLt - join the Army Navy Country Club - two courses in the DC area, and there's a waiting list (and initiation fee) if you don't join within a year of being comissioned.

No longer on military bases, but my two all time favorites were The Presidio Course in San Francisco and, number one, the Cubi Golf Course; 18 holes, a caddy and a couple hot dogs and sodas at the turn (for you and the caddy) and all for less than ten bucks in a National Geographic setting.

I haven't been to all the Air Stations yet, but my personal favorite has been the one in North Island so far. Admiral Baker a little further north is rad too.

The Gallery at NAS Whidbey Island - cant beat the scenery - and you can tee off at 2000 in the summer. Also, the rag tag course at NAS Meridian has a special place in my heart as that's where I spent every free second for the better part of two years.

Right on, it's nothing to brag about but the good 'ole NAS Meridian course has its charming nuances. However, if you want to do some serious golfing in the bustling metropolis that is Eastern Mississippi ... go to Phily. They've got some serious greens and it's actually fairly affordable if you're in the military. It's worth the trip.
