FAM 1 was 40 Years Ago Today

Did you ever open the 34’s canopy in flight? I slowed down and did, just for a few seconds, to feel “old school cool” during my first Navy solo.

I never did it on my solo, but had done it on one of my late stage fams with the IP for an EP. I found it really annoying. I would do it with everyone of my FAM 11 students so they could see how busy/hard it was to configure everything for the EP while trying to PEL and then hand crank the gear. Even with my canopy closed watching from the back seat, it was still annoying with the exhaust.

I would tell them in the brief that, "today was going to be part of the student harassment package. Have fun."

I was taxiing in with a flight of 3 CH-46's at MCAS Tustin when we heard the news of the Challenger listening to a local AM station on the ADF. We shut down and went into the ready room to watch the coverage on the TV. It wasn't 30 minutes after the explosion when a LtCol from MAG-16 Ops walked into the RR and boldly announced " That's something the Soviets won't beat us at... First teacher vaporized in space." I can say that the Viet Nam vets and the post Viet Nam folks had a completely different take on humor in the face of adversity.
