His bio says "Wanna be a Naval Aviator," so I'm interpreting that as that he wants a commission eventually. Fair enough, right?

Fair enough. I just thought you were thinking OCS vice boot camp.

Shit I can walk it in that and I'm 52.

I ran the PFT (USMC) 3 miles in 19 and some change

I always hear people claim that and it is such BS. To do a 12:30 1 1/2 mi run you have to run at at 7.5mph pace. Not record breaking, but certainly faster than a jog. Unless of course you are 8' tall with an enormous stride.

a 12:30 mile and a half is a tad slower than an 8 minute mile. 8:20 to be exact. 2:05 seconds per lap. If he's bitching about having to work for that... come on. I see it like this: I couldn't run for crap when I graduated HS, but I knew that if I wanted to be in the military, I was gonna have to up my running ability. So I just did it. We're not trying to tell him he's gotta like it or anything... we're just saying man up and do it. We all did.

Bubba out.

Have you ever been to Navy boot camp? Just asking the question because for you to say the above and not have been seems...well...somewhat disingenuous...:D

Goddamn scoob, just commenting on Cordespc's remark.

No, I haven't been there, and for all I know it's just as hard as Marine boot camp.

Just saying he ended up making a "moto" statement in a line or two.

When I went to boot camp I was in the same boat as this kid, out of shape and worried about completing the run let alone doing it in any sort of decent time. I quickly found out that running is as much, if not more, mental than it is physical. If you go in with a strong desire to succeed and push yourself on every run you do prior to your PRT you will get to where you need to be. Once you realize the quickest way to get out of boot camp is to pass the PRT you will have ample motivation to keep on pushing even when your body says it can't go any further or keep up the pace. I'm still not a fast runner and I have to work at it to keep my time under 12min but my endurance has gone way up and I'm actually planning on running in my first marathon later this year.

I always hear people claim that and it is such BS. To do a 12:30 1 1/2 mi run you have to run at at 7.5mph pace. Not record breaking, but certainly faster than a jog. Unless of course you are 8' tall with an enormous stride.

I agree with your sentiment entirely but at 7.5mph you would do the 1.5mi in 12min flat. For a 12:30 run time you would need a pace of 7.2mph.

This...is...Caketown!
Running sucks, I hate it. I've always hated it, and I've always sucked at it, and don't know why. My initial PFT at OCS last time was 23:40 (3 mile,) and they "counsel" you if you get 23:45. It was running that did me in...

That said, I love running because I absolutely hate it. Every step, every breath screams, "You could be doing something else now that doesn't suck so much." Every other step, you realize you just forced yourself to do something you hate to attain a higher goal.

There's nothing as satisfying as facing something you hate doing and voluntarily forcing yourself through it and defeating it in spite of yourself. Finishing three miles (or 1.5, whatever your case may be) is a great feeling, especially if you managed a decent time or improved over the previous run.

Just keep your eyes on the prize and keep thinking, "Man, this sucks, I love it!"

I think I am mentally damaged from trying to pass a PFT a few years ago. I enjoy running now, but I still violently hate the run portion of the PFT.

Boot camp

I’m gonna chime in here. Young fella, if being a naval aviator is what you want to be, and you don’t have the money for college, then yes enlist, get through “A” school, excel at your rate and then get your education paid for by the navy. There are other men here on this site who that have accomplished just that! However, I do agree with all the other men here who are telling you to get your commission first. That is if you have the loot and are able to go to school on your own.

As far as running, well don’t be too concerned. If things haven’t changed you’re gonna get plenty of practice. We doubled timed everywhere, even to church on Sunday morning. Physically you’re going to get plenty of chances for practice, “Drop and give me fifty.” or “Get those knees up.” you’ll be fine, and be in damned good company as well. The ”96 manual arms” seems to stick in my nightmares, my God don’t worry. They’ll get you in shape! Plus they’ll offer help when help is needed.

As for the experience! Well young man, I just turned 60 and still stay in touch with some of the men I served with, I wouldn’t have it any other way, they are all great men. Boot camp is a challenge, but take it in stride. The things you’ll learn, you’ll use the rest of your life. They teach you to “Get er done”, among many, many other things. If you like, PM me, one enlisted man to another. And R.J. Glazier, EN1, my company commander if you’re out there thanks! You were a great Company Commander, and DI.

Well that said I’m off for a cold beer! Something else I learned in the navy.

Thanks for the advice guys.
running 1.5 miles means doing 7.2mph without stopping from start to finish...man that sucks! I'm not obese BTW I'm 140lb and 5'8 and i do weights daily except sunday, but i didn't run more than a mile until march07, "ever"
but my time is constantly improving, i just hate getting those show stopping "side aches" and "shin aches" -due to landing on my Forefoot, but landing on your forefoot is better than landing on your heel according to almost everyone.
