FAA Medical Certificates FYI

I just got my second class medical two days ago and the doc said that the FAA regulations recognizing Navy flight physicals (equal to a FAA 2nd class) is almost a go. Apparently it's been through all the steps, now all that is needed is the director's signature, which could be next week or next month. Knowing my luck it'll be next Monday considering I just got a new medical this week.

Oh, and for the 1st class/ATP, isn't that kind of pointless as most aircraft you fly under that would require a type rating anyways? Either way, for the same price I probably would've gotten it too.

You only need a first class to exercise the privileges of an ATP as PIC of a 121 flight. Some other instances too, just can't think of them. You can be a private pilot and still have a type rating.

And a 1st class is always a 1st class. A 2nd is always a 2nd. You can only exercise the privileges as such for the times allotted. At the end of the 6th calender month, a 1st doesn't revert to a 2nd. It's still a 1st.

An EKG or an ECG is required for a 1st class after 40 years old and for the first after 35 years old on first class certificates. Not cheap.

Perhaps the price was the same for me becasue I'm only 26 and didn't require and EKG or and ECG going by what your saying, I don't know. Thats odd that all of you say that your docs have had different prices for the different certificates. I mean, it makes sense, but why would this guy be doing them for the same price when he could be getting more money from them, interesting.

The flight docs that I've dealt with also had different prices. And to clarify, your 1st class medical remains a 1st class medical even after the 6 months are up. However, you may only exercise the priveleges granted by a 2nd class medical after that point until the 12 month mark. Then it still remains a 1st class medical, but now you may only exercise 3rd class medical priveleges. Semantics.....:sleep_125

Well yeah, after six months, on the top of the certificate it still says "First Class FAA Medical Certificate", but for all intents and purposes, it becomes a Second Class Certificate because the priveleges it allows you to exercise are only that of a Second Class Certificate. Or am I missing something?

This is all part of the rewrite to Part 61. When I spoke to the FAA MFWIC in DC, he stated that this was expected to become reality on 10 Sept 08. I have subsequently heard a rumor that the timeline could be accelerated.

A first class medical is always a first class medical, regardless of what you are allowed to do with it. I understand your argument, but in the terms of medicals this is how it always works.

I just got an email going along w/ this (and your previous) posts. Still haven't really heard the "how" of getting the CFI qual, but either way, I'll be PCSed by then, so hopefully they'll have a way for a recently qualed IP.

Do a NATOPS/IFR/Stan check on the way out!

I still don't really see how that helps. I'll be current in all of those when I leave, so what's the difference if the check was 6 months old or 4 months old? I'm going to try and get a few quals re-qualed at the end, just for that reason, but I'm hoping for the "w/in one year..." clause that huggy mentioned in another thread.

I'll be following up with the FAA and NAFI over the next few months. I'll post any new info that I get.
