Holy sh!t Fezz, where'd you get that avatar?!

My avatar is a direct result of bowling at liberty lanes and bowling with the local cuties. The party continued to the Ensign Estates and one of the girls got curious and wandered *ahem* into my room and saw all my gear. She tried on my nomex and helmet and PRESTO! She is a hottie indeed. Probably among the top 1% of hotties in the Pen-suck-cola region. If only there were more.....

The fundamental problem with the conspiracy theorists is that they're desperately trying to make the facts fit the conspiracy. If you were the US government, couldn't you think of about a hundred better ways to frame a terrorist attack? Couldn't you even think of a hundred better ways even to frame this particular attack? Isn't it a little odd that the government is so incompetent they would come up with a plan this garbled and weird... yet so highly competent that not a single person "in on it" has blabbed?

Ditto. I watched CNN's piece on TWA 800 last night. It's clear that those who subscribe to conspiracy theories do so in spite of glaring evidence to the contrary. It pretty much exposed Pierre Salinger, one of the original proponents of the "Navy shot it down" theory, as a complete buffoon who somehow thought that fabricated "evidence" off of some conspiracy kook's website was actually secret evidence of a US cover-up provided by the French intelligence services.

My argument to any conspiracy theory is this: Our government can't keep the lid on a fairly pedestrian and non-controversial program to monitor terrorist financial transactions, but we've somehow been able to keep mind-blowing and potentially government defaming scandals under wraps for a decade - yeah, right. Achem's razor, baby.

Wow. Metal to vapor in 21.1 jiggawatts.

Awesome vid.

Firstly, you should haze yourself for not knowing that its 1.21 jiggawatts, as HH-60H already corrected you on. Its only from one of the best movies of all time. Secondly, all the good looking girls who bowled up at Oops Alley in Pace were certainly NOT a legal age. Safe to say thats the only place I ever saw girls show up in their prom dresses to bowl.

That answers a big question for me. I didn't know a plane could do that. Then again, I'm pretty much a moron of a physicist.

Did the Navy do it?

There is one guy who is a former policeman who is so sure of conspiracy that he grabs at all straws...even to point of accusing Navy of downing it with a missile from an Aegis cruiser...like you could shut up several hundred sailors, all armed with email.

Jim Sanders, now an investigative journalist and former police officer went so far to publish a book on his suppositions in April 1997, The Downing of TWA Flight 800, (by James Sanders)

He claims to have independently researched the case and have supporting evidence that an AEGIS cruiser fired a missile during a test that inadvertantly locked onto to TWA Flight 800 on July 17, 1996. He also believes that government officials discovered the truth ordered it covered up. His summary of evidence:

- Navy testing of AEGIS cruiser with drone launch and missile firing in the restricted area where Flight 800 was lost
- A pattern of reddish-orange residue on the passenger seats where he says the missile impacted the aircraft
- Large bullet-like entrance and exit 'wound' in the fuselage indicating a missile
- Original FAA radar report that indicated an unidentified object approaching TWA 800 (FBI tried to suppress this info supposedly)
- 34 independent eye-witnesses to some sort of 'flare in the sky'

The book is at: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0821758292/103-2680019-5634248?v=glance&n=283155

Some of the reviews are pretty scary...especially when you consider that if they are Americans and of age, they get get to vote and their votes count as much as yours and mine.

Yeah, they covered some of those points on the CNN piece. Basically the FBI guy running the investigation said the following. First, they did all kinds of tests to look for explosives residue - nothing found. Second, the position of the cruiser in relation to the flightpath of flight 800 put it well out of range of the type of missile alleged to have been used. Third, the primary radar contact of question is not traveling at high speed, nor does it ever merge with flight 800. Of course these, or any other facts can be dismissed or waived away under the guise of "big government cover-up." Awfully convenient. Like HJ said, these people are voting, for Christ's sake.
