Extra DLA

On my last PCS, I received two advanced DLA's. Being the honorable gentleman that I am, I called up MATSG back at Meridian and told them of the goof. They told me they would work on it and call me back. My question is this: will they take the money out of my pay in one large chunk or spread it out over several pay periods?

Any help/experience is greatly appreciated.

The Navy will generally take it out of your pay, as a suprize.. DFAS sends out a notice to PSD, but they often drop the ball, and never pass the word.

Not sure what/how the Green side hanles it.

Never happened to me with DLA, but I got over 3 months of BAH at TBS that I didn't rate, thanks to an SOB admin CWO who couldn't be bothered to stop planning his retirement to sign off on stopping it at the right time. They tried to give me a no-pay-due for December that year, and when I went to complain, the new Gunner looked at the evidence and managed to get the debt liquidated. I wouldn't count on that happening, though. In fact, I'd be willing to be that they swipe it all back at once. I wouldn't spend that extra cash, if I were you.

Be prepared for the worst. The same thing happened to me when I went through flight school in 1999. The folks at PSD SWORE up and down that the extra month of DLA I got was authorized. 2 1/2 years later after a audit of my pay record, DFAS tried to recoup. I had a signed letter from the Bozo at PSD in Corpus that said I was authorized the amount and I didn't have to pay it back. It was a fight though. If someone says your authorized the money, get them to put it writing, set the money aside, and then use the documentation to show how gooned up the "pay professionals" are at PSD.

If DFAS/PSD goofs and pays you in a lump sum for anything and you don't rate it, they will usually take it back out in a lump sum. You can sometimes petition to get it in an installment payment plan, but that can be painful. If you don't physically have the money to pay it back at the time they want it, you'll likely have your pay garnished for x-number of months till the Navy gets their dough back. I saw this happen to a handful of enlisted Nukes who were expecting their bonus after prototype but got it while they were in A-school. They all ended up paying it back, but only one guy actually still had the whole amount. The irony is the rest of the guys had to pay it back month by month, and paid it off, only to receive it right back when they finished prototype.

However, like Rob said, if you have someone in PSD say you are entitled the money and there is any chance you may not be, have them write it down and sign it. It may be painful, but that way you'll be covered in the long run.

I still have the money sitting in my direct deposit account and I know that I am not authorized this money...so I guess I'll just wait for the the admin Marines and the system to catch up. I'm still hoping that the money gets taken out in monthly installments, almost like an interest free loan.:D

Thanks for the all the replys.

If and when they decide to recoup this money, it won't be in monthly installments.

While you have the rights there, quite often I have seen PSD (Navy) drop the ball on informing you that you have a collection coming while there is still time to fight it.

I'd say out of 8 or 9 cases I handled when I was a divo, all but 2 never got notice, until their NPA/LES a week prior showed no pay or minimal pay due. By then, its too late to fix in time for payday.

Also, 5 of the guys did not owe the money, it was just a paperwork SNAFU at PSD. They did the paperwork properly, and it sat in some GS's desk and died there. I have noticed personally, that when trying to make sure stuff was done correctly (DLA Claim, BAH Claim) it's like meeting the great wall of beauracracy.

The 5 who were in the right, got their money back.. But lets face it, a large number of people in the service ARE living paycheck to paycheck. And no, Officers' are not immune to it either..

They got what was due to them, but not after having their lives turned upside down.. Thank god Captain Kennedy (USN-RET) at the Mayport NMCRS office was very understanding an normally would cut them a check for what their pay would have been.
