I graduated with a BSCE (Civil Engineering). The Civil and Environmental Engineering department at my university (Central Florida) required you to take it. I ended up taking it twice, and passed the second round. Will I ever use it? I didn't know then, and don't know now, but like many of the other posters said you never know what can happen in 5 years.

It also depends on the engineering degree. In Florida for Civil and Environmental Engineers it is critical that you have your PE so that you can sign and seal projects. Then again, FL and CA have the strictest PE requirements.

I took it after finishing my MS (Chemical Eng), not sure if I'll ever use it but I decided that there was no need to have doors closed to me down the line because I didn't take it. It was almost insultingly easy, so if you have the cash on hand and 8 hours to kill, you might as well get that check in the box. I bought a thick guidebook and took a couple practice tests beforehand and was fine.

Thanks y'all. I plan on taking the test but I worry that if I NPQ from pilot that the navy will want me to do NUPOC or another engineering job rather than SNFO if I take the test - or am I worried about nothing?

You are worried about nothing. They will not force you into a CEC or especinally not a Nuke pipeline just because you're an enginerd.

Could it look good on an application for redesig for someone applying for CEC or Nuc or even NFO? Yes, yes it could. Would it predispose a person to be placed in any particular pipline? No, not at all.

I am getting an aero degree from UCF (Go Knights!), and I plan on taking it next year sometime. I'd like to get my Masters at some point during the Navy, and like others have mentioned, it can't hurt! Could be the factor that nudges you over someone else to get into TPS, you never know.
