Im in primary right now. my grandfather (who for personal reasons is very important to me) is going to pass away in the next day or two. Im going to take emergency leave, but dont know how much I should take and if it counts. A bunch of my buddies said it doesnt count, but the admin folks at my squadron said it does. Can anyone shed some light on this? Basically i want to know if im going to get charged for taking emergency leave.

Yes, it counts. Think of it as leave that is put on the fast track and you can go in the hole.

I can't answer your question about leave specifically, however I just went through this exact situation 2 months ago with my grandfather who raised me and I was out of state on business. Thankfully I got back in time to see him, I hope you do to. Good luck, it's tough but it does get somewhat better. Thoughts and prayers for your family...

Yeah, what vette said. I know we all went through this same game in the enlisted community when we were super wet behind the ears. Some bad gouge gets out about emergency leave being free or whatever, but it is absolutely charged. What it DOES do for you is make you CAT I (top o'the pile) for Space-A, relaxes the rules on going in the hole for your leave balance (especially since you're so new and so much time left on contract), and it causes everybody in admin and the COs office drop everything to get you chopped as fast as possible.

I'm pretty sure it opens some doors for commercial travel as well, but I don't know the specifics there.

Yes, it's called a bereavement fare.
When you book it with the airline, mention that. They'll need to know who is your relative, where they are and possibly a doctor too. Usually it's a steep discount, but sometimes it isn't always the cheapest, but what real choice do you have? It is always flexible and they'll work you into the best flights as best they can.
I went through this a few years back when I my Grandfather passed. It really sucks, good luck man.

The best thing (if there is a best) is that the bereavement fares are open ended. I went on E-leave, ended up staying home a few days longer and all I had to do was call the airline and tell them my plans, and it was changed with no charge, etc.

Rocky - my condolences for your pending loss. It sounds like he was very influential in your upbringing. Keep in mind though, that the Navy only has to grant you emergency leave for an immediate family member (father, mother, etc). I believe the term is "Loco parentis" (sp). If it can be proven that the Grandfather falls into this category, then you are fine. Once in the fleet, you will deal with this issue a LOT. Just something to put in your hip pocket for the future.

Also, considering you're in primary, I wouldn't worry too much about how much you should use. I don't know how deep in the hole emergency leave can get you, but trust me, take whatever you need (if it's within the limit). You'll make it up once you get to your squadron.

My condolences, and good luck.

thanks for the posts everyone. I got the whole leave situation figured out with my squadron, and even got my airfare pretty much cut in half to go back up to the NorthEast from Texas. Its gonna be a shitty week, but im happy everything went smooth getting it setup. Thanks for the help again.
