Embry Riddle anyone?

The sim works well for IFR training. I don't mind practicing instrument stuff in there because you can shoot a lot more approaches during a sim ride versus a real flight.

Eh, The sim runs $70.00/hr with an instructor, its about $60 cheaper per hour than the plane.

I can see how you wouldn't want to attend if you're paying on your own, but what is the big deal if the Navy is picking up the tab? Aero Sci really isn't that different from a liberal arts major. You can get an MBA after graduation and be prepared to go get a job in airline management. I'll be the first to admit I wish I had selected another major, but hey, flying 3 or 4 times a week for free isn't that bad. The city, however, is the sh*thole of the Southeast. Anyone who complains about Pensacola needs to come live here for a bit. This place makes me miss Pcola.

A simulator is a great training aid for IFR flying. However, I think using a visual sim for teaching Private Pilot studs VFR flying techniques is a mistake. If you have less than 50 hours in any sort of aircraft, you need to be doing your learning in the air. It doesn’t matter how good the sim is, you need to have a good feel for the real aircraft when you are starting out with your flight training.

Regarding saving 60$ per hour. In the course of instruction (private through commercial) you will end up spending just as much money trying to get a feel for the real aircraft due to not having enough time in the air. I got the chance to fly one of those sims when I visited the PRC flight line. I could not believe they were teaching steep turns in that sim.

I didn’t know that the NROTC scholarship also covers flight training. When I was there, the ROTC guys had their tuition covered but had to pay for flight out of pocket. Hey, if you get Uncle Sam to pay your whole way, then hell might as well spend all the money you can get. However, I still think that going there now and doing Part 142 is not a smart move for someone who has no scholarship and has to take $120k plus in loans. ERAU is no MIT or Harvard. No one should have to pay that much money for a Aeronautical Science degree when they will be making less than $25k (some of the time much less) for the first 3-4 years (probably longer) after graduation.

What the heck are these fees for?! Are they trimming the budget that much?

Army ROTC Fee - Daytona Beach/Prescott $15/$25
Air Force ROTC Fee $20

I went to ERAU @ Daytona for my first year of school.
I'll say this: why pay (or have paid for) all those flgith hours and get an Aero-sci degree when the military is gonna retrain you their way and on their dime.

If you don't go military, what's that degree good for? Being a CFII at the local mom and pop FBO making $20k a year if lucky (Aero-sci guys are a dime a dozen even WITH a $120,000 "education"). What's it really worth? 4 years and you can call yourself a pilot. Bravo. That and $0.50 will get you a cup of coffee. If you do go to Riddle, go in under one of their numerous engineering programs. There are a lot more people hiring for engineers than pilots. Riddle has a good track record with their engineering programs and landing good jobs.

You are smoking crack! Cal Poly Pamona and San Louis Obisbo are great engineering schools. Cal State San Bernardino is NOT a party school (I used to live across the street from it). UC Irvine, UC Davis, UC Berkeley.....these are all great schools and known more for their academic rigor than the party scene. Brown University up here in Rhode Island or even Harvard are not party schools in the least. But guess what? If you're prone to partaking more in the social scene than your academics, it won't matter in the least where you go to school. There's always a party to be had somewhere.

I can think of at least one place where he could transfer where that wouldn't matter. :D

Concur and to add, get an education if all you do is fly in college for a major then fly in the military you will be an awfully one dimensional person.
Be well rounded, jsut my two cents worth

Two pages of negative feedback on the school may have convinced me to look elsewhere. I will definitly start looking at other schools.

Its not that I'm getting on an anti-Embry bandwagon, but financially it is way out of my price range. Doing some quick research I found San Diego State has an awesome Aerospace Engineering program for about 1/4 of the tuition. Its a damn shame a place like ERAU has to cost a fortune! Since I have intentions of becoming a military officer I better make some wise decisions. This seems like a wise decision to make in the mean time. Once again thanks for all the feedback.

ERAU isn't that great so don't feel like you're missing anything. Do yourself a huge favor and don't get an aero-science degree.

Previous admonitions notwithstanding, if you're worried about going to a party school, SDSU may not be your bag. Otherwise, I heard it's cheap, not very challenging, and SD is a great place to live. They also do cross-town NROTC from my school (USD) on site at SDSU which keeps the commute to a minimum. I can put you in touch w/ the NROTC guys if you want.

There a plenty of schools that have good AE programs other than ERAU that cost a whole lot less. I would also recommend looking at schools that in addition to AE have good ME programs, business programs, or management programs since you never know how much you're gonna like AE and it's nice to have other options if it comes to that. Also, while you may not be looking at a party school now, I wouldn't recommend a monastery. In a few years you might want a school that has more to offer than just academics. And on that note, I would also add to go to a school that has a decent amount of women, if anything, it never hurts to have decent eye candie on the way to and from class.
