That was some wild driving! I spent several years at El Toro starting in 1953-4 and all I can tell you is the hills are to the east! It breaks my heart to see all the weeds and the appearance of desolation. I'd guess the hangars are to the southwest from the clips. Wow.
I left there in 1961 and my last visit was probably in 1970?+- just before it passed into history.
wowww.......
MCAS El Toro ... it stunk ... literally. Too many flatulent cows in the area 40 years ago. And for being in the LA area, it had to be one of the lousiest, smelliest, suckingest (?) places in the SoCal OP AREA.
I stayed in the BOQ there a couple of times in the '60's ... WW2 style "Q" w/ a common head in the center of the building ... more like a barracks than a "Q". When I went through there years later, prior to the BRAC closure -- I always made certain that we stayed "in town".
I always wondered why they closed El Toro and kept Miramar open. Politics ... it's not like the airspace is any better.![]()
Mebbe your friend liked cow farts ... ???Literally the exact opposite description of a close friend ....
