Do they hand you glasses at OCS?

Spekkio

He bowls overhand.
My vision is in the 20/30 - 20/40 range. I've never bothered to get glasses because I can still get around just fine without them (and I don't have health insurance atm). Are they going to test my eyes at OCS and hand me those dorky strap glasses because my vision isn't 20/20?

My eyes are like 20/200. Im already preparing for the BCG's. I can wear contacts or my own glasses on liberty right?

You may get lucky and not ever get your BCG's. Its happened to plenty of people, you just get to say "This candidate has not recieved his BCG's" about 40 times a week when your asked why your the only candidate that doesnt look like Drew Carey.

Or if the Doc is cool and says "you can wait to get these until API, right?" you can respond "Yes, ma'am." 20/30-20/40? You can probably live without glasses during OCS. It's not like the DI's know who needs to wear them....

Exactly my sentiments. I'm probably just gonna go straight for Lasik/PRK when I can afford it and skip glasses entirely. That is unless I am made to wear the dorky glasses at OCS.

You plan on getting Lasik/PRK after OCS?

Also... it has been a while but I had 20/30 in OCS and didn't wear any glasses.

Yea, I plan on doing it sometime after. I'm not applying for pilot, so the fact that my vision is on the cusp of the 20/40 limit really doesn't matter.

Unless something has changed recently, most candidates wear their own glasses--albeit with a "dorky" strap. I only saw one DI who forced candidates to wear the issued glasses. I doubt that your appearance (other than being squared away) will be of great importance to you once at OCS.

NOPE. My flight doc asked me if I wore glasses before. I said nope. He said just to come back for glasses after I commissioned (since I'd need them for flying) but that I didn't need to wear them then if I didn't want to. Basically ask your doc to not get you glasses made if he doesn't ask you because if you get them, you MUST wear them, but if you didn't wear them before, don't wear them at OCS. It's another thing to get sh!t about (improper headstrap etc). Plus they are named BCGs for a reason...

Im so used to my contacts that going back to glasses full time will be rough, especially during pt.

you'll have enough stuff to worry about at PT that you'll forget about your BCGs right quick... but yeah just tell the doctor you see fine without them and you don't need any birth control

I never needed glasses before and I'm 20/25, but since I was picked up for STA-21 as a Pilot I had to get a pair. I was afraid they'd issue me BCG's but instead I was allowed to pick the frames I wanted out of about 25-30 different sets they had at the Optometry clinic. So who knows, maybe you'll get lucky like I did and get military issue glasses that won't hinder your ability to procreate!

I went through in 2002 and no one in my class got the BCGs, we just wore whatever glasses we came with. I will say, however, that I was disappointed I didn't get them, because they woulda been fun to screw around with later as a joke. :)
