DirecTV Shenanigans

I just got hammered by DirecTV. Time was when military PCS'd, they let you terminate service without charge (2007), now they want $200 unless you are moving overseas. Several of my compadres have had the same issue, with service reps assuring you it can be cancelled with PCS orders when you sign up, then playing typical call center games when you call to cancel.

Not sure if you have the time or the desire, but you can complain to the Better Business Bureau, they sometimes helps settle something like this, and even make a complaint with DirecTV if you so choose. I had a hard time believing it when I first heard about them but some companies have something called an 'executive complaint', where your complaint gets elevated to a much higher level much quicker.

Good luck!

I've used the BBB exactly once, and I was contacted by an AT&T rep within a day. The issue was resolved to my satisfaction almost immediately. This is opposed to the previous week of waiting on hold for hours at a time and talking with people who had no clue. The BBB took all of 20 minutes to file my complaint, and was worth every second of it.

If you pay automatically with an account/credit card I also suggest blocking DIREC TV from accessing them. DIREC TV continued drawing money from my account for two months after I cancelled service, and it took me 9 months to get my money back. I almost went into withdrawals this year without NFL Ticket.

I'm in the middle of a PCS and had no problems terminating my contract w/ them.

One trick I've found when dealing with this type of situation is to hang up and call right back until you get someone who tells you what you want to hear. Seriously, it works (which says a lot about the consistency of customer service.)

I will second this. I have had them for almost 10 years and we have NEVER paid to move and have actually gotten upgrades in equipment for free when others have been charged.

Seriously, hang up and call back, talk to someone else.
