OK, here is my dip story (actually not mine but a guy in my first squadron).

A-6 Intruder midair. Persian Gulf. 8 Sep 1993. Everyone ejected OK.

B/N of the second aircraft ejects at about 12k'. Gets a good chute. Does his IROK procedures (for you young pups, that is Inflate LPU, Release Raft, Options (mask, visor, gloves), and locate Koch fittings).

He is now down to about 8000', so he pulls out the PRC-90 survival radio and makes a few Mayday calls.

At about 5000', he realizes that the wad of dip he has in is getting stale so he spits it out, reaches into his shoulder pocket, gets the can out and inserts a nice fresh wad.

Ya we've heard about actually going straight and level fir a 5 minute smoke break back when I was in primary.... amazing how times change.

OMG - when I was an SNA - I remember flying with one IP who used to smoke in the back all the time - This was mid 80's so I guess it was still OK and OPNAV 3710 hadn't prohibited it yet. But yeah I tremember him saying he needed a smoke break and we'd motor around the area waiting for him to finish

A4s... now that's balls, pure oxygen and lighting up a zippo... anyone ever forget to secure the O2 and come back looking like they took too long to drop the match in the propane grill?
One of my instructors at Moody in the T-6 would dip on flights... with his mask on. No spitting. Guts of steel I guess...

Like my whole damn wardroom dips on the plane, as do damn near all the FE's and IFT's. I find it rather nasty myself, but wouldn't dismiss the idea of doing it in hour 10 of a 12 hour burner. Most guys just stick a spit bottle into the top of their SV-2 and simply lean their head forward to spit.

The P-3 does still have ash trays on most planes, or at least the metal mounts for them. Some guys (so i've heard) open up the galley vent and smoke back there. If i were a PPC i'd kick them in the nuts for this, but hey, I'm just a 3P....

I don't like chew, but if it keeps someone awake and alert, that's better than eating the deck at 200kts.

People used to smoke in P-3s until around '92, then they just did it near the open freefall chute ;)

Nope ... and if they were prone to forget these types of issues, one supposes they would have never made it through potty training, let alone flight training. :icon_wink

Whenever Im sitting in the cockpit messing with the SMS or something I either swallow my dip or I just lean over (make sure noboby is underneath me) and just spit over the side.

mask or no mask, thats rough. no way i could stomach that. but now that we cant fly over 290, the hornet never really gets that much over 080 cabin press at that alt.........so you could just keep your mask off and have a little water bottle handy, and youre all set.
