$175 8.1 MP Nikon S51 - I have this camera and it's a great little point and shoot.

$193 8.1 MP Sony W130 - I'm a fan of sony cameras. Reason Carl-Zeiss lenses. Sony makes an excellent digital camera.

$130 8.2 MP FujiFilm J10 - Fuji makes good little cameras. I've had a few buddies be really pleased with these. Great price too.

All of these cameras are excellent options for you in my opinion. As for megapixels don't ever get caught up in that too much. Higher simply means that you'll be able to make larger prints with better clarity or you will be able to crop down a picture and still get the same quality. But many times you can become limited by your lens.

I feel that I've given you a few options here that are pretty sound. I've listed hyperlinks for the specs and low prices. Check it out.

Good Luck

Steve,
One thing to consider... many of the small digitals have a delay of a second or so between when the button is pushed and the camera actually snaps the picture. I bought my wife one of the little Nikons for Christmas and this drives her nuts. Ya might want to play with a few before you settle on one.

I would avoid sony. I'm not sure what specifically causes it, but all of their digital cameras seem to be blurry on the right side of the pictures they take. It's weird.

I tried several Sonys before going to cannon. I also have the 750 and it's ftw

Canon is also an excellent brand. Although I do not agree about what you are saying about ALL Sony cameras. They make some solid cameras. Specify models if you have found an issue.

I had that problem on some of my cameras until I realized I could hold the shutter button half way down to sort of prime the camera.

Holding the button halfway down serves to focus and adjust for available light on most digitals. While that may take the delay out on some, it does not on others. As I said before, spend some time playing with any model you might be interested in.

My older Sony DSC-F717, while bulky compared to some of the newer compacts, takes great photos with it's Carl Zeiss lens and has no delay.

Thanks for the quick responses. I see I have some research to do!

Check out THIS site for some helpful reviews.

BTW, I own a Canon Digital Rebel XTi (10 MP) and I absolutely love it. EASY to use and it takes incredible shots.

Pretty much depends on how you are going to use it and how comfortable you are with looking like a Japanese tourist.

I have two cameras - one for bars/flight and one for "serious" photography. The bars/flight one is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5K and the "serious" one is the aforementioned Digital Rebel XTi. The Lumix does a lot of things great, but doesn't give you the control that you'll find on a Digital SLR. That control is crucial for taking shots in low light or when you want to get a ridiculous (300mm+) zoom lens to take pictures of aircraft. That's what the DSLR provides.

For the vast majority of people, just get a point-and-shoot - don't bother with the DSLR. Another caveat with the DSLR - once you start getting invested in shiny new lenses, it becomes one more money suck.
