Just curious. I saw talk of 20/400 with contacts and I saw the reg. for the waiver but I was wondering if anybody had any first hand info. on this? I am getting ready to do my flight physical and am right at around 20/40 so my nerves are getting the best of me lol.............
 
I spoke with my OSO and showed him the link. Last I talked to him he was going to contact NAMI for more clarification on it.

I'll let you know what he finds out.
 
Yes, it is true, but because it came out with no warning or fanfare, neither service has written a waiver that encompasses it yet. The Marine Corps is working on the waiver form right now, I just heard today.
 
Soooo, that being said... My vision is -.75 sphere (well within refraction limits) and right on the border with visual acuity at 20/40. If when I do my flight physical in three weeks or so I test at 20/50 or 20/60 (hopefully not) will I be able to get a waiver for my glasses? I don't wear contacts because my vision is not bad enough to require them. Is this waiver only for contact users?

I'm in the same boat, at my last eye appointment I had 20/35, so I have a pair of "reading" glasses to help I fatiugue I use on when on the comouter, this waiver will really frop my blood pressure. :)
 
20/35 and you have "reading" glasses? 20/35 implies being nearsightend. That would mean you would need glasses to see far away, not up close.

I also have a pair of glasses I wear to keep my vision from getting any worse. The prescription is like -.25 in one eye and -.25/-.50 in the other. Although my new prescription is -.75, I am not going to get them for fear of worsening my eye sight.

I really really hope that the requirements go up so that I can lower my blood pressure as well lol. Hopefully I will just pass my flight physical without a hitch and it won't be a problem. We shall see.

I'm telling you what the doc told me, and you're right I can see anything up close, far away is my difficulty, I just do what the Doc tells me. :)
 
For all of you asking: I know you're curious, but nbobody on AW can tell you anything definitive. You just need to be examined by the appropriate medical folks then they'll tell you what's up.

I took a copy of the NOMI reg into my OSO today and said, "does this mean I can get a waver and apply for Pilot?" Being that my package is done and the capt is reviewing it now, they had me sign a pilot contract (so now I'm applying for NFO/Pilot) and the Capt. will get in touch with the doc about the waiver. When I find out more info I'll post it. My eyesight is 20/70 in 1 eye, and 20/100 in the other.
 
I sent that same question up my COC the day I saw that. What I heard back was that I should cancel my PRK appointment and wait it out because my CO and XO both read it to mean that waivers are now available for contacts. The emphasis seems to be contacts though. I don't think it applies to glasses.
 
Yeah, I read the waiver as applying to contacts also but that just seems strange to me. Why wouldn't the waiver be good for glasses? It seems silly that somone could have 20/400 with contacts and if they have 20/50 with glasses they are SOL.

Fingers crossed I test at 20/40. Blah.
 
Just a heads up.

My OSO just contacted me yesterday after speaking to NAMI about the new waiver. You must have worn the contacts for six months before you can apply for it.
 
Yeah, I know. Thats why I am ineligible. I don't have contacts now as my vision is only around 20/40 and that doesn't warrant contacts. They will just make my eyes worse. Fingers crossed I test at 20/40 for my flight physical.
