Dental Work?

Straight from the website: "Candidates will bring any health, dental, or shot records they possess. Dental problems are a frequent cause of initial physical disqualification. Candidates will ensure they are not in need of dental work."

So question for any one who knows, I still have my wisdom teeth in, is that going to cause a problem? What sort of work are they talking about?

Hope someone can answer this for me.

Two of my good friends went to Parris Island right after high school and before their freshman year of college. They said within all of the vanity that was going on the first week at Boot camp that there were guys getting their wisdom teeth taken out. I dont know if you know anything about the wisdom teeth extraction procedure, but it's not a procedure one would want done at PI. My point is to get those things taken out as a civilian where you'll have time to heal. I can't imagine trying to deal with all the stress of the first week of boot camp and my mouth being swollen. Get the procedure done, for this is one less thing to stress you out at OCS. My $.02

Yeah, I actually just went to the dentist for a general pain...one of my wisdom teeth is coming in at an angle and pushing on the roots of my molar...ouch! I've got to call a specialist and get in to see them. Good thing I don't leave 'til August.

Williamson- first off, there's no reason this question couldn't have been asked the other day when I taught you the 5 paragraph order... but OK, you're going to make me come to airwarriors to answer your question... good to go.

FYI- They don't even LOOK at your teeth at OCS. When they say you should have dental work done, that means don't show up to OCS with any cavities. If you do have a cavity at OCS, you have 2 choices-
1) Don't tell anyone about it, deal with pain.
2) Tell someone about it, get kicked out, because I don't think OCS even has any dentists on staff.

Wisom teeth are not a problem. At this point in time, unless your wisdom teeth are giving you a serious problem, I wouldn't bother to get them done. Why? Because you'll easily lose at least a week of training before OCS with them. Also, you run the risk of developing dry sockets... a really nasty disorder if you know anything about it.
Bottom line-
wisdom teeth removal= surgery
surgery 2 weeks before OCS = ****ing terrible idea.

Unless your Wisdom teeth are absolutely ripping the hell out of your jaw to the point where you can't even eat because it's so painful, then they should stay in, without a doubt.

yeah, I had a similar question about the dental. My wisdom teeth are coming out but the dentist said they should be pulled, yet I have no pain. I also have a cavity but no pain, but I just wanted that cleared up. Thank you.

Well, you might want to get the cavity taken care of... just lay off the wisdom teeth for now.

Basically, for anyone going to OCS soon with a medical question, just ask yourself (or much better yet your doc)this-
Can this wait until I get back from OCS?
If it can, it probably should.

The cavity might be worth fixing just in case it does get painful when the decay hits the nerve, and most cavities are REALLY small procedures too. Getting wisdom teeth out is much more serious, and will probably leave you laid up for a while. Plus, when I got mine out the doc told me not to exercise for a week so I didn't make the sockets bleed.

On the other hand- if your doc says you need your wisdom teeth out TODAY, not 3 months from now, it might be wiser to sacrifice the week so you won't have troubles at OCS. Surgery a few weeks before OCS is a bad idea, but so is going to OCS with a condition that could screw you over in the end.

Just explain the situation to your doc, hopefully he can make the right decision.

I just had my flight physical two weeks ago - my wisdom teeth have never given me any problems but at dental they told me I needed to have them pulled before I go to ocs. I PFT next week and was going to have it done after that. Luckily I have until October, but I'm not looking forward to it at all.

I'll probably just go with whatever my specialist tells me. If it won't cause problems, then I'm leaving them.

I was at Marine OCS in 2001 and I still have my wisdom tooth (the only one). Also, there were a couple people who had cavities fixed later in training (after the 3rd week or so). They just went to sick call and the next thing you know they're getting a filling. They didn't get kicked out, so I don't know what the website was talking about.

Man,

I have never seen so many Marines crying about their teeth. I thought you guys chewed bullets and spit napalm.

That's the same website that says that cell phones may not be brought for any reason... yeah right. I actually listened to that last year, and when liberty hit, everyone else pulls out there cell phone while I'm waiting in line for a pay phone.

Taxman2A...thanks for the information, I meant to ask you the other day when we did the 5 paragraph thing but I forgot. I heard about the delay in the commissioning, sorry to hear that but I am glad that you will be commissioning. Does that mean the wedding will be pushed back? Just wanna know when I can send the gift. Have a great summer, and keep me updated. Good luck at TBS when you go, we'll take care of everyone next year. Talk to you later...
