Dental Hygiene

My girlfriend is going into Dental Hygiene and we had been talking about her finding a job IF I'm selected and go SNA. I told her I honestly don't know what her situation would be in terms of how hard it would be to find a job, just that we'd be moving around A LOT, especially in the first 2 years or so.

Do any of you know anything about the availability of Dental Hygiene jobs in and around Navy bases? Health care jobs in general? Are there positions for civilians on base? (I think I've heard of something like this before but I'm not sure).

Thanks a lot,

MTS

I know the dental clinics at Lejuene/New River use civilian hygienists. I don't know specifically how they got their jobs, but often military spouses receive preference when applying for a job on base.

There are MANY civilian jobs on base. Everything from cashier to health care to accountants. Some are "GS" government civilian employees, others are contractors.

With the possible exception of some parts of Alabama and Mississippi, dentists are found pretty much everywhere, so the potential for employment is there. Every hygienist I've ever seen at Navy Dental is a civilian and I presume your chick would have just as good a shot there if positions are available. There are some employment programs for spouses, but not for GFs or hook-ups.

Check your PM's... my Dad was a EM then met my mother a Hygentist at NAS Norfolk... and he got out to go to school and become a Dentist. I can't think of anyone who could help you any better...

Piece of cake finding work as a Dental Hygienist. My first wife (a.k.a. the Dark Side) was one of the breed and never suffered from the ability to work in and around NAS's, when and if she chose to do so ....

Of course, sticking her hands in other guys' mouths was one of the reasons we divorced. Just so you're aware of that potential downside ... :)

You forgot the UK. Not a promising job over there.

In Palma, we met a bunch of girls who were dental students on spring break, or "holiday," as they put it. I tried to make a joke to the effect of, "British dentists, huh, must be a lot of business there." They didn't get it...

My mom is a dental hygienist. She's never had trouble finding a job, and has had the luxury of picking where/who she works for most of the years she has worked.

From the Mrs.: There are two paths to getting a job with Navy medicine as a civilian. You can either sign up as a civilian employee of the Navy, or you can sign on with a contractor that provides personnel to various Naval Hospitals out there. The way that the Navy outsources for medical personnel is changing right now, though, and they are pulling away from large contractors and moving more towards smaller, local/regional ones.
(For the full effect, please imagine a hot Puerto Rican accent, coming from an even hotter Puerto Rican Pharmacist.)
