I'm going to Washington, D.C. next month. I've never been there with an opportunity to bar hop. Any suggestions? Any places to avoid?

Georgetown is generally a good bet, a little expensive though. As for particular places, being married has knocked me out of the game a little bit lately. As for places to avoid, Southeast DC and Prince George's County, MD are locales where you do not want to venture. Oh yeah, and the Pentagon if you can.

If you are willing to make the trip, Annapolis is pretty cool. Small town with some cool pubs that you can stumble from one to the next through the night. It is summer and there will be less middies around.

I don't know if this helps at all but that is all an old married knows about 'the scene' here in DC.

Second on avoiding Southeast & PGC... unless you want to get shot.

Avoid anything near Dupont Circle (don't ask, don't tell).

Dupont Circle is good, but make sure you're going to the right bar for you. Under the Front Page (great for Thursday nights) is Buffalo Billiards which is a pretty cool hangout. West of the Circle on O street is Pizzeria Paradiso, highly recommended. A few blocks south on Connecticut Ave is a bunch of popular clubs. Also, take a walk from Dupont to Adam's Morgan (walk up 18th St. to Columbia Rd.), there's plenty of good places there... Crush, Reef, Heaven, Hell, Angry Inch, Madam's Organ, etc. On the way you can stop at Lauriol Plaza on 18th and S for some awesome Latin food. Don't forget a late night jumbo slice of pizza from one of the local joints scattered about 18th St.

Off the Cleveland Park Metro there are a few good spots. (You'll be in the middle of it when you exit the station)

Virginia
Old Town Alexandria has some good spots along King Street. Also, there's always Clarendon for Whitlow's on Wilson and others. I'm sure you'll have plenty to do.

As for what to avoid... I'd avoid everything in the district except for NW (even then don't go as far east as 10th above M street) and Georgetown.

One more thing... take Metro and beware of the time Metro closes, unless you don't mind paying for a cab. On weeknights(Sun-Thurs), Metro closes at 12 am. On weekends(Fri and Sat), it closes at 3am. This is all subject to change based on events in the city.

I agree with this except there are some great bars and restaurants near 8th and I in SE like Finn MacCool's. That whole area has been revitalized, but like anywhere in DC, even NW, be aware of what's going on around you.

Otherwise, Jay's list is a good one. :)

Almost forgot! With DC's zone cab system(pretty cheap)...I cab it anywhere in DC at night to be on the safe side. Also, if you take cabs out to VA(usually to Arlington or Alexandria) make sure you call Red Cab or Yellow Cab of Virginia as DC cabs don't have meters and will screw you over.

yes, there are some bars around 8th and I. The problem is getting there by metro means you're going to have to walk through some bad areas that I would avoid unless it's daytime, but then still watch out. Also, you may want to catch the Silent Drill team performing at their 8th and I ceremony. The Navy Yard is a short walk, but you'll need a badge to get on base unless you make prior arangements with the museum. You can visit the USS Barry, check out the museum and see the CNO's house.

Bob and Ediths is great!

I completely forgot about Habana Village...they do have great mojitos!

Frontpage in Ballston(Arlington, VA) has better food then the one near Dupont Circle in DC.

As mentioned before, Georgetown... When I went with friends we typically started off at Old Glory near the Corner of Wisconsin and M and made our way up and down the street from there.

Theres a place down the road closer to to GW that a lot of people go to. I think it is called McFadden's, people usually start off at a hole in the wall called Froggy Bottom before they make there way there.

If you Like the Irish bar/music thing, Murphy's in Old Town Alexandria is a good place for it. There are also some smaller bars on the same street.

Georgetown is good for shopping and hitting on hot, rich girls...

Adams Morgan is a collection of bars and clubs in DC.. HIGHLY recommend. Nothing beats NY style pizza at 2AM when you're stupid drunk.

Clarendon in VA (Arlington I think) is alot of fun they have a pretty good DJ in there most weekends.

There are two: Claredon Ballroom(more club like and probably the one you are talking about) and Claredon Grill.
