Crappy Mattresses and Solutions for the Long Cruise

My manfriend was griping the other day about the crappy and uncomfortable mattress they have on the carrier. He is going on long cruise in a few months and I was thinking it would be a great idea to get him some sort of mattress padding or foam that he could put on top of his bed to make it more comfortable.

Any tried and true advice or ideas for me? Memory foam? a huge a$# tundra style sleeping bag?

It's not so much the matress sucks, it's the springs that are under it in my opinion. Cut to size and put a piece of plywood under the matress. It worked for me!

Yes, PLYWOOD is the KEY!! But to make it easy, like Hoover said, cut it into 3 equal pieces. Now the real trick is getting it on the boat. Top off the mattress with some comfort foam. I slept like a baby.

Take your plywood and stack the pieces together. Wrap with bubble wrap and ordy tape and place with the squadron gear for onload. Works every time.

Plywood or a large piece of tri-wall. That stuff might as well be plywood.

I've done that in a pinch too. For those not in the know, the tri-wall is a HUGE heavy cardboard box that squadrons use to move goods to/from the boat.

To expand on the TRIWALL, I've included a picture:

Make sure you get the nice memory foam, not the cheap egg carton looking stuff. I got the 2" Queen size memory foam and the folded it in half for 4" of pure comfort and joy. Its the only way to go.

If you want to go the extra mile, then buy him a drop down LCD television with built-in DVD player. I would NEVER leave my rack on the boat. You'd have TV, DVD's, and Gaming all in one location. :D

Also, he could try an inter-service transfer to the Marine Corps. They don't use many mattresses where they go. Some of squadron mates used to P&M about our housing in VN till we went to Da Nang & Chu Lai and saw how the Marines lived. Everyone got real grateful, real quick.

Or you could go ARMY (can I get a Hooah?) and live in a CHU with a real bed.
