Corpus or Vance?

ooooo... the infamous vance stand-up. ay carumba senor!

flyindevil-- do a site search for words like 'vance' and 'corpus'. this topic gets rehashed every so often, and you'll probably find a lot of information in locked threads. then ask away-- after a search, you'll be more inclined to get the response you're seeking.

I also know of people who left Vance with real high NSSs (70+) who got helos because thats all that was available the week they selected. Can't escape Navy timing, even on an Air Force base.

FlyinDevil, one thing to think about is at Vance you'll arrive there between 3-6 weeks before you class up and if you get the T-6 you'll be dealing with a new sylabus that hasn't fully been ironed out yet (ie grading etc.). I've got a friend there now, says sometimes it is a pain.

I was slotted to go to Vance for a month before I left Pensacola (because that was the only slot available at the time), but at the last minute they gave me a Corpus slot, I got here and classed up the following friday... I enjoy seeing the water everyday, and most of my friends are here so I have no complaints. You can avoid the big sim backups if you are assigned to 27.

Goodluck with your decision- make the best out of whatever you chose.
 
No one with a 70+ NSS gets helos unless they ask for it. I call BS on that. The last class got 7 jet slots because the "grades were that good, and we couldn't see not giving it to them", from a CDR in the know. I believe a little more in the system after hearing him say that. Don't expect a guaranteed spot just cause you have jet grades, but a 70 is not just jet grades......

Thats the best advice on this thread. At the risk of sounding gay, ORM it: the benefits of going to Vance certainly DO NOT outweigh the risks, so the decision is simple, go to Corpus.

coming from someone who left vance in april, there is no real reason for someone to want to go to vance over corpus or whiting. you will definitely NOT get to your wings any sooner. having to PCS twice and repeat the AF version of API at vance takes care of any hopes of finishing faster.

beyond that, it is a different way of training. there were a few things i liked about oklahoma in general and several things i disliked. in the end, it's only a small part of your career and it's all a means to an end: your wings. flight school is going to be hard no matter where you go. my advice to you flyindevil is to not choose vance if you think you will get your wings faster or because you stand a better chance of getting jets, because both are false ideas.

I went to Vance, and without a doubt I winged way faster, in fact out of my class I winged 2nd or 3rd, BUT that was before the Navy straightened out the flight training pipeline. It was also before you selected a primary location after API. I did not do API I went straight to Vance. With all the changes, I would guess that the "wing faster" arguement might be rumor from the "old" days.

That being said, it was alot of fun. The AF class camaraderie is awesome (if your class gels) and it is very beneficial for studying purposes and just the motivation to get through the "boot camp" style flight school (IMO that is a harsh description). In fact I keep in touch with several of my AF classmates.
If you have a family, that is a good place to go, Enid is a great family town, it is not a great single guy town. Another positive is that you can see a little about how another service works.

However, it is a more stressful style of program.
When you get back to the Navy, you don't know how Navy flight training works, and you are a little behind the power curve.
Also, sometimes Vance can leave a little to be desired in Navy admin support. I have a fitrep continuity break from that time because my detaching fitrep never made it to BUPERS.

There are pluses and minuses to the whole thing, but in the end, I am glad that I went to Vance.

VERY TRUE, but the wing Commander of the 8th was a Navy Commander. He has already left or will be soon. There are some Navy there....instructors and what not. You wouldn't be completely alone!
 
Actually, the 8th is the 8th FTS(quadron), and while I was there a Navy CDR was the XO of the squadron. I also had Navy instructors as well. I mentioned admin support because while I was there, there was a single YN2 who did all of the Navy only (non flight training) related admin paperwork.
 
Don't believe anything STUCON tells you about people getting this or that advanced slot based on where you go to Primary, or really anything else for that matter. They'll feed you **** all day so long as they fill their slot quota; that's all they care about, trust me.
And if you must do A/F training, do Moody, only because the T-6 is (literally, no BS) about 40 years newer than the Tweet, and much more representative of the technology you'll see out in the fleet (or that should be arriving in the fleet shortly).

No more Navy studs here at Moody, I was the last to arrive and no more will be sent here. You can all thank the Gods that this is a fact.

Doesn't Vance have the T-6 now too?

There are always times when the crap hits the fan in training and you get put on the backburner because of manning......aka my one X a week in Forms right now. The problem is the flux of students...duh! the whole friggin navy does not comprehend Manning ....not just Corpus!


I would say, from what I've heard about Vance, to go to Corpus. Hands down, do not collect $200, dont let the door hit you in butt......GO TO CORPUS!!! Just for your sainity...just to make sure you dont have to wish for those 6 months of your life back. I loved Corpus....except the smell...but you get used to that in a week :eek: ....the flying is awesome ....right over the water! :icon_smil
