Contact Lens Prescription @ Branch Med

I'm just looking to get advice on obtaining my contact lens prescription from medical. I remember doing the eye exam for NOMI but I'm not quite sure if they actually wrote down my exact prescription. I'd hate to pay $89 for an eye exam at Walmart plus another $20-30 for contacts. Please help so I dont look like an idiot when I go to Branch Medical. Thanks.

You can get a contact prescription at branch, just walk in. They will not give you lenses though, so you'll have to buy those yourself.

Thanks Swmtb.
I don't know how they do it in the TRACOM, but in the fleet, you get a standard letter from your command and you get your contacts free as well. I started doing the in the RAG, so I don't know why they would do it any differently in the TRACOMs. Inquire within.

I think the current rules are: You get free Navy contacts after you are designated (earn your wings.):icon_wink

Chief is right, apparently one has to be somewhat useful to the Navy to rate them. Fair enough if you ask me.

Do they have it already written on a paper, then the doc just issues it to me?
The exam for contact fitting is different than the NOMI eye exam.

I spoke with the Doctor this morning during my check up, Im still in the waiting pool for API. I asked him about getting contacts and he said that I had to get a form to get into the contact program, he would sign it, the CO would have to sign it, and then your in. He didnt say anything about having to have wings, but this is just what he said.

So we get issued free contacts? That would be nice. Where can I get the form for the contacts program? Thanks Rocket.

From the sound of things, you may have to wait until you get to the RAG, but it can't hurt to ask your command.

He said to ask the eye people (ocology?) or the branch medical people. I didnt ask because I ran out of time. The doc said he would sign the paper, so I dont think we have to wait until the RAG, but that may change when 10 guys show up to get contacts.

So in the interest of accurate threads, for future "searches" looking for that information, what is the long and short of it? Will the Navy indeed provide contact lens even if you do not have them thar wings?:D

I just saw the eye doc this morning. He wrote me a prescription for both contacts and glasses. I even got to choose new frames for the free glasses they give us (i told the doc the ones they issued us after nami were pretty ugly...he agreed).

As far as contacts, all I just got was a waiver for in-flight contacts when I report to Primary. But the Navy will begin providing free contacts (and PRK if you want) AFTER you get winged. This is what the eye doc told me.

Hope this answers any questions. Cheers!
