What was the original question? Oh yeah, flight school = fleet rep? As beaten to death as it is, dude, it doesn't mean diddly. That pink sheet you sweated out during Primary? No one knows, no one cares. You scored a 79/34 NSS, once again, no one cares. Can you land the plane, fly it tactically, and not try and kill the rest of the crew? Dude, we care!! As mentioned, and man, wish I would have had this thread to read when I went through! You get evaluated at the FRS, I can only speak to the P3 Mafia, but I assume (yeah, ass out of u and me) the other communities do the same as discussed above. The strong players and weak are identified, and the info is passed on to the squadron. You WILL get evaluated at the squadron, in your upgrading flights, but that is a first check "hey, a dirtbag is headed your way, caused problems in the FRS, and we barely didn't kill him" (seen it happen). Or, "golden boy/girl enroute, knows their shiznit and is a funny dude/gal"... Squadron CO/XOs sometimes are on the lookout to fill important billets, so god help ya, you might get tapped to fill one when you report... Legal Officer anyone? (fvvvvvccccckkkkk!!!!!)......
You go the Wings of Gold, and you are feeling all "special", while you MAY think you are Joe Cool, you still ain't **** in the eyes of the FRS and the Fleet Squadron, you my friend are the FNG.... What's that you ask, you got it, FVCKING NEW GUY/GAL...
Best advice, study, do well, keep your trap shut while you settle in (no, there I was stories please), and keep a damn good sense of humor. The best way to make a positive rep is to qualify earlier, do well on your boards and in the plane, and not be a jackass to your peers in the wardroom. You see one of the senior pilots/nfos (LTs) getting overwhelmed (dude, these guys and gals CARRY the squadron), HELP THEM OUT, and it goes a long way, plus you learn something. Flip side, get out and party, socialize with your peers. You may be married or not, but a big part of aviation is the lifestyle and the socialization, shop talk and learning from your peers. I think we as a community have pulled away from this since when A4s was flying tacair, but slowly getting better at it.
Switching gears... stepping on your crank... I genuinely feel for the post here on the forum earlier that has been mentioned. But, you are going to do something spectacularly stupid at some point, keep the game face on and ride it out, makes more points in the long run, and your peers can respect you for it. Also, speaking of having a "big mouth", be carefull what you whisper to a buddy during an AOM, your voice may carry, and the CO can LIGHT you up!!! And no, ummm, I am NOT talking from personal experience, um, yeah... lol
