So there's a COMSEVENTHFLT helo spinning outside my window. Who are those guys (O-4)? How do you get that job?

Wow, I can't believe that helo is just a part of a regular squadron. I assumed it would be dedicated strictly to the Admiral and be stationed and flown separately. Thanks for the info!

From the A/C MODEX, it looks like they have two birds dedicated to the Admiral and the rest of the squadron has regular helos. I wonder how they select (or shaft) the crews that are responsible for the VIP XFER.
 
A guy I winged with in 06 was offered a 60F slot in Japan to fly that helo. It's owned by HSL-51 but they have a few 60F pilots. He went through HS-10 and got a shorter syllabus.

Exactly. It's a separate selection and not a random Bravo guy that gets "shafted." When I was going through the RAG, there was a CAT 1 going through w/ me that did his first tour as a H-3 guy and transferred over to the Bravo and it's mission. He recently picked up O-5 (and command, I think, but can't remember), so I guess it worked out for him.
 
The OIC of the VIP Det is an HS guy who didn't screen for operational Dept Head.
 
As said above, HSL-51 in Atsugi has a special VIP det that flies 2 modified SH-60F's. Some of the pilots are Super JO's and some are retreads from other areas. The det follows the Admiral around and are usually stationed on the USS Blue Ridge. From the guys I know there that fly/flew them it's not that bad of a job, except for the fact that you are an HS pilot dealing with an HSL squadron.

Your gonna be seeing a whole lot more of us on the carrier, can't we just all get along?
 
Coming from HS-14, we dealt with HSL-51 on the carrier all the time, as well as on the 2 permanent small boy dets. I have no problems working with them, the guys are great for the most part. I'm just saying that I wouldn't want to work in an HSL squadron.
 
One of my best buds from HS-8 is now one of the O-4's on the 7th fleet Det. He likes it.

I did a Midshipman cruise on the USS Blue Ridge (basically a gray cruise ship) and it was a bad ass time. All they do is bounce from port to port, and they party their asses off. It may not be the best career job, but it's a good job.
