I was watching a program on the Airforce and the recruiter came on and said that a candidate can be a safe and competent commercial pilot, but might not be suited for a pilot position in the Airforce. Any idea why this may be? Is it just life in the military, or are their real skill differences/personality differences between commercial and military pilots?

Thanks,
Courtney

Well, for one thing you may have to kill people. Some people may be great pilots but not prepared to do this. Even if you have a non-lethal pilot job (cargo, recon, etc.) for the military, you may have to fly to over enemy territory. Let's say you are shot down behind enemy lines. Does the possibility of being captured, imprisoned, tortured and/or executed a risk you are willing to take? To most people it's an acceptable risk, to others it may not be. Something to think about.
